Summary
Really, the reason he doesn’t think about Courtland is that he’s a coward. His absence, and then death, have impacted every decision he’s ever made, and everything he’s turned out to be. He’s gone most of his life missing an essential part of himself and pretending like it was fine. But it wasn’t fine. It was an amputation that never healed. He can’t think about it because the enormity of it would bring him to his knees. He has to keep moving.
So he doesn’t think about Court for his own sanity, and here is proof, because moments after allowing himself to grieve him for the first time in years, his dead brother is sitting at his kitchen table in the dark, watching him through cautious eyes, spirit-summoned like a ghoul.

Court comes back

“ Hey, Shiro.”
“Yeah Lance?” answers Shiro, from his place perched on his and Adam’s kitchen aisle. He’s looking at some files, that much Lance can tell, but they’re in a language he doesn’t know. Which isn’t hard to do, Lance only knows like, four well enough to read.
Besides, there are some more pressing matters at hand.
“What was your death like?” Lance would have tried to be more gentle with his question, but he currently doesn’t see a way to do it. Shiro visibly recoils, and Lance winces till Shiro puts his human hand on his shoulder, smiling reassuringly.

They say that the Lion chooses the Paladin. The Blue Lion chose Lance to be her Paladin.
And then all the other Lions seemed pretty okay with him piloting them as well.

Summary
(Heavily inspired by the fucking AMAZING prompt by gamergirl_lumine on tumblr)
In canon, we’re told Lance got his Altean marks as a reminder of his love for Allura.
But what if he got them through different means? What if they stood as a living memento for him to look at every time he sees his own image, reflecting his inherent belonging to the lions as their paladin?
His story may have begun in the sunny beaches of Varadero, but Lance has traveled far further than he ever thought he would, sprawling out across the universe with first Blue, then Red. But what if there comes a time after the original lion swap in which Keith and Shiro are both indisposed and Lance needs to step up to the plate and pilot Black?
Will she accept him? Or will the barrier remain raised once more, leaving the fate of the universe on the wrong side of history?

Black opens up for Lance. Lance is… not amused.
Or; apparently Blue Paladins are able to pilot other lions when their paladins are unavailable. No one told Lance that before.

“Keith!”
He blinks, trying to make sense of the image on the tablet that Pidge is holding in front of his face. It takes a moment, but then, “holy shit.”
“That’s him, right? That’s gotta be?”
“It has to,” Keith agrees, “I thought he might’ve died by now."
“If there’s anyone to manage surviving alone in an infinite universe off of dumb luck for two entire years, it’s Lance,” Pidge replies, something soft in her grin.
They go with hope filling their chests, eyes bright and determination clear. Because he left; because he's been gone.
And when the lead is as dead as they've all been, Sol asks, “is it worth looking?”
Keith looks to him a moment, and shakes his head. Because Sol stays and Lance goes, and maybe…
Maybe Keith can live with that, now.

“What the fuck do you want,” Keith growls, sitting up and glaring at the Cuban.
Lance raises an eyebrow back, completely unfazed. “I want you to get out of bed. You’ve been locked in here for three days, and it’s making you feel worse, not better.”
“I think I’m entitled to some fucking self-pity, Lance.”
“I never said you weren’t. I’m just saying that the rest of us have been crying with company, and it feels marginally less shitty than sobbing in your room alone.”

OR: Keith is struggling with Shiro’s disappearance and his own inability to be what he thought Shiro wanted. Lance, it turns out, is a big help. -

Basically, a rewrite of that scene when they pick out a new paladin when Shiro goes MIA, except Lance is the Black Paladin. Because he deserves it. Well, maybe not the trauma part, but recognition as a leader is a good start.
I kinda made Allura a bitch here, anD I'M SORRY, SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE THE BAD GUY, and I'm picking on her :(
She'll get her redemption, hopefully.Oh yea. It's also mostly from the Lion's perspectives cause I think it'd be funny if they just kept Shiro company during his time in the astral plane.

Summary
There was something wrong with Shiro. He had yelled at him, shut down his ideas. Sure, before he had disappeared, Shiro hadn’t exactly loved all of Lance’s antics, but he’d at least listened to his ideas. And he had certainly never shouted like that. Lance frowned and leaned closer to the TV screen. There had to be something to tip him off.

Lance thinks over recent events regarding Shiro's strange behavior, and comes to a startling conclusion.

Summary
It's a diplomatic mission to a planet that apparently has a slight zombie problem that ends up being what tips him off. Something is going on with Lance, something that he's missing that's right within his grasp. The answer is in one of his missing memories from his time as a clone, he knows it is, he just doesn't know how to get it back. In the meantime he's left to wonder why the hell Lance would be the only one on the team other than him to be considered 'predisposed' to a zombie disease.

Keith looked surprised, when he answered the call, to see only Lance.
“Hey,” he said warily. “What’s up?”
Lance shifted uncomfortably. “I need to talk to you.”
Keith looked confused. Lance couldn’t blame him. “About what?”
“About Shiro.”

Shiro, his clone, and the many chances they had along the way to get it right.
It’s just him and the Red Lion, alone in this strange space with whole galaxies wheeling above his head and a pale light coming from somewhere that makes his armor glow faintly and gives him familiar vibes (quintessence? his mind whispers) and his thoughts drift to Allura’s magic; finding the Blue Lion; connecting with the others and calling for Shiro to join them, watching his silhouette flicker into view and straining to hear him saying—
“Lance?”
“Shiro,” Lance murmurs, lost in memory.
A beat. Then: “What are you doing here?”
