Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.

William moved away from the car, approaching the schoolyard, waiting for Michael to get closer to him. He spotted him with three boys, but only one seemed to distance himself from the strange conversation, which he couldn't quite understand because of the noise of other people. Something was not right. He noticed Michael and the three boys were straying from their path. He guessed they were planning to do something other than simply leave the school, so he decided to react. Something was clearly off with these boys. He'd seen Michael with them more than once.
“Hey, Michael!” William called loudly, waving his hand at his son. He might have missed him.
Luckily, Michael noticed him and breathed a sigh of relief. His dad hardly ever picked them up from school, and when he did, it was usually because of Elizabeth or his own decision. It was a chance to avoid trying to run away from another problem, but nothing was his fault to deserve this.

Charles dangles the beer in front of Scott's face. "Now come on. You seem like you need it."
Scott curls his hand into a fist before it reaches the can. "I really shouldn't."
"Okay seriously. What's going on?"
Charles sees the words dancing then dying on the tip of his tongue. Finally he heaves himself off the floor and into a regular sitting position on the couch.
"Vi got mad because… she said that if I can't hold onto a book how the heck am I supposed to hold onto a kid."
A different two and two slam together in Charles' mind. The realisation hangs silently between them as, for the first time since they met, his best friend says something that completely surprises him.
"I'm … I'm gonna be a Dad."
The whole living room seems to tilt on its axis. Charles opens the beer himself and takes a long swig, uncaring that its lukewarm from his face. Scott. The Scott who up until three months ago had walked into every open door in this house is about to be a father.
