Summary
Instead of Shane, it is Ilya who suffers a concussion during the Boston-Montreal game in April 2017. Dazed and agitated, Ilya briefly starts speaking and responding only in Russian and the medics can’t calm him down. Luckily, Shane started studying Russian after Ilya spoke to him in Russian on the phone from Moscow. For no particular reason. Certainly not because he’s fallen in love with Ilya Rozanov.
In Montreal with lingering concussion symptoms, Ilya is advised not to fly home for a few days, and the hospital won’t release him without assurances that he has someone to stay with him until his symptoms improve. Luckily, Shane conveniently has a condo in Montreal no one knows about and a few days before he has to travel again.
But Ilya’s symptoms don’t resolve after a few days. Which is okay; Shane can handle it. He can take care of Ilya, study Russian, lead his team into the playoffs, and keep Ilya’s continued presence in Montreal a secret. He can do everything, no problem. He is Shane Hollander after all.

He made it his goal, once their parents died, to hide what he can, and prevent Darry and Sodapop from dealing with his chaos. Ponyboy's not sure what scares him more: admitting to his brothers that he's been hurting all week without telling them or knowing that Darry will see right through his lie and know something's wrong.

“Yeah.” I’m so alive right now that I can feel the pulse jumping in my throat. “That’s, um. That’s good.”
In the back of my mind, a very cool and rational part of myself is telling me: hey, since you’re on the subject of internal organs, why not take this opportunity to ask Rocky to feel you up so he can check on your appendix/gallbladder situation? Unfortunately, the rest of my mind just heard ask Rocky to feel you up and had the psychic equivalent of a seizure.

Summary

When the government discovers the Machine’s true power, Nathan is assassinated and dies in Reese’s arms after giving him a secret back‑door flash drive meant for Finch — the Machine’s hidden co‑creator. Reese swallows the drive to protect it but is captured and later escapes, crashing a car off a bridge in rural Montana.

The brain has a funny way of blocking out trauma like this, of shielding the body from things that would hurt it to remember. But Shane’s ears are still ringing with the sounds of metal crunching and tires screeching, even if there’s a large blank space in his head where the memory should be. The crash was a blur, a blink. Terribly long and then suddenly over, a heavy silence now descending over the eerie stillness.

Along the base of Conner’s neck, the skin had parted like a wet bag of rice, and three massive, irregular pillars of gray calcium had driven their way out through the muscle. They were jagged, coral-like growths that looked like they had been gnawed out of stone. The largest one— the size of a standard tent peg— was angling sharply to the left, its blunt, heavy head catching the edge of Conner’s scapula every time his chest expanded with a breath.
"Puppy," Tim said, his voice slipping into that sweet frequency that belonged only to the two of them, the tone that meant the capes were off and the world was small enough to fit into a single breath. "Look at me. Open an eye."
