    He's trying his best to hide his anxiety, but he's just a little guy and, assuming, separated from Saphira and all allies. The one or two people that try to talk with him are now going to be be chased off by angry Murtagh

    this is such a good read! eragon is trying so hard to hold himself together, so murtagh becomes the only point of stability he has left, even if that stability is… deeply complicated. and of course murtagh immediately isolates him further by driving others away, which in his mind is protection, but in practice just reinforces that dependence. it’s a mess in the most delicious way <3

    just for drama’s sake, it must be lyreth now! murtagh probably already has irrational night terrors of lyreth and eragon making out, so he doesn’t need an excuse to blow that man up with his MIND

    correct about the timeline! without the understanding that true names can change, there’s no framework for hope or transformation yet, so everything feels a lot more trapped, a lot more inevitable. eragon can’t reach for that kind of solution yet. he is just really earnest and Serious About Love and cannot hide that part of himself if his life depended on it. the original lover boy!

    you’re right on both accounts! murtagh is just massively projecting his own worst fears about what can happen: 1) people’s irrational hatred and persecution of him his whole life will now be validated because of his incest 2) all the suffering ultimately ends in an unjust death anyway. so everything feels heightened and catastrophic to him.

    and galbatorix is exactly that kind of madman where morality isn’t even part of the equation. incest, love, identity, none of it registers as meaningful boundaries to him. what does matter is leverage. if something can be reframed as control, humiliation, or pressure, he will absolutely use it. as with your metaphor about sales quotas, it’s about utility. he will read murtagh’s worst fears and hold it over his head forever to get what he wants.

    overall a very pleasant man! no idea why they overthrew him in the books

      Yes!! I agree with you on the codependent Murtagh thoughts. Legitimately wanted to throw popcorn at my book when Murtagh accused Nasuada of trying to make him her attic husband.

      No babes, that’s what YOU would do if you continued to work with Galbatorix and had a problematic love interest. Nasuada is offering you a discreet situationship and to damage control your PR until your romance can go public bc she has boundaries

      Eragon, however, in this fic is offering Murtagh everything because he had NO boundaries even before being Traumatized (moreso than before) by Galbatorix. Idk I just love this pairing because they are Freak (unashamedly browsing the porn section in Galbatorix’s library for research purposes in this fic, enthusiastically and openly only displays interest in older, experienced women in canon) for Freak (closeted, fantasy!Catholic whose deepest, darkest canon fantasy is of a) female love interest complimenting him and offering unconditional love like mommy did and b) D/s relationship with his estranged brother) in such equal but opposing ways

        PLEASE the “attic husband” accusation is so insane because it really is just murtagh telling on himself like 😭 my guy why is that your first assumption. what kind of business model are YOU running

        BUT are we even surprised. this is the man whose canonical ideas of romance include bludgeoning his love interest over the head with a sword and kidnapping her via dragon to be enslaved and tortured (by him!) and who also fantasized about ruling the kingdom with her as his name slave just like papa did with mama… like his idea of courtship is CRIME and we are meant to think he is ok 👍

        and then he turns around and is suspicious of everyone else’s intentions like. oh so NOW we’re concerned about manipulation and coercion. fascinating. incredible. groundbreaking self-awareness happening here
