The Nolans kept walking, leaving a full breadth between themselves and the fedora man. He turned to watch them with a grin. “I wasn’t talking about him. I was talking to you, ma’am.” The grin broke into a full Cheshire smile. “The name is Trent Oliver, I’m a recruiter for Mr. Harvey’s new All-American Girl’s Professional Baseball League. I’ve been traveling all over the midwest trying to find girls with talent like yours, but damn, none of them have your arm.”

Buck's eyes widen, obviously surprised that Eddie remembered that. See, look? He's recovering remarkably quickly. He'll have his full memory back in no time.
"Your husband," Buck repeats and Chris, for some reason, starts giggling.
"My husband," Eddie agrees happily.

The messy, ridiculous, insane two-step program was much more successful.
One: get wine-drunk and join a support group.
Two: make sure your best friend (that you’re hopelessly in love with) is still your emergency contact, even when he’s eight-hundred miles away. -

The kid claps a hand over his mouth. His eyes are huge and sparkling with something that looks like excitement or mischief, probably both.
"Sorry, sorry," he whispers loudly. Then he leans forward, like he's about to share a secret. "You're a hunk, right?"
Buck chokes on nothing. "I. What?"
"A hunk," the kid repeats. "You know, a hunk."
"I..." Buck has no idea what's happening. "Sure? I guess? I mean, I've been told... I work out sometimes—"
"Perfect!" The kid is already digging around in his backpack. He pulls out a slightly crumpled rectangle of cardstock and presents it to Buck with great ceremony. "This is for you."
It's a handmade card written in crayon, blue crayon. The handwriting is careful but wobbly, the letters all different sizes.
