(im)moral values

Summary:

We both know the roles we play.

Work Text:

"It wouldn't kill you to speak to her, you know," Carole insisted, blocking Judy Fabray's path with her shopping cart. "Quinn is pregnant—"

"You don't think that I know that?" Mrs. Fabray snapped. "That's why she's out of my house, Carole. Russell and I won't have such debauchary under our roof."

"She's your daughter."

"That doesn't matter now, does it? We aren't like the likes of you," she informed her. "If you and your husband want to pretend that this isn't the embarrassment of the century—"

"Do you think that this makes Chris and me happy?" Carole demanded, as she heaved a case of beer into the bottom of the cart. "We didn't want our son to impregnate his girlfriend anymore than you wanted his girlfriend to get pregnant," she informed her, hands on her hips. "We weren't going to leave Quinn out on the streets, Judy, of course we took her in."

"It would have served her right to be homeless."

"How can you be so cold?"

"Quinn knows where her father and I stand, and she deliberately betrayed us. I have nothing more to say to her. She's lucky that we haven't fiscally cut her off. I was tempted, but Russell said it was too much effort. People would ask too many questions."

"You're disgusting."

"I'm sorry?"

"I'm sorry that I even asked you to speak to Quinn, because, it's clear to me that you don't deserve a relationship with her, or with my future grandchild," Carole spat. "They made a mistake, Judy. There's no need for you and Russell to treat it like a capital crime."

Mrs. Fabray sneered. "Didn't you make a similar…mistake?" She asked, casting a shrewd gaze in Carole's direction. "You had Finn awfully young, didn't you?"

"We were married," she scoffed, leaving out that she'd been dubiously young when she'd eloped with Chris, who had been headed off to Basic Training, and, of course, Finn hadn't been planned. "Before I got pregnant," she clarified. "Not that that's any of your concern."

"I was only making conversation."

"No, you were being a bitch," she corrected. "I was hoping that, maybe, Russell was behind Quinn's expulsion, that you weren't the cause of it…that you would want to see your daughter, even if she couldn't live with you. I see now that I was wrong."

"Quinn stopped being my daughter the moment she got pregnant out of wedlock. Why is that so hard for you to understand?"

"I would never do that to my child."
