Summary
Ah Duo’s estate is a beautiful cage.
It is a merciful cage, in many respects. Suirei, for her treasonous acts, for the conspiracies she helped enact, by all rights should be dead another time over. So too should the Shi clan children running around her feet, though their only crime was one of association. Ah Duo herself is less a jailor and more a fellow prisoner, a circumstance Suirei can’t help but sympathize with.
She supposes the estate is no less a prison than the rear palace. Nor is it less a beautiful one—but Suirei would much rather be here than in the Emperor’s garden, suffering the fate of her grandmother.
