Maybe Not In Vegas

Summary:

The Ori have been defeated and the team decide to celebrate.
Set post Ark of Truth, and before SGA Season 4.

Notes:

I don't really have head canon for this scenario, so it's good to play with the possibilities! I do think it would be totally understated like this though and I've always been intrigued by Sam's confusion at the beginning of SGA Season 4 when Sheppard congratulates her.

Work Text:

The party is pretty much like a lot of their team nights, only with an added twist.

There’s beer, several forms of take out and the TV is on and blaring out something Jack doesn’t even know. Somewhere there is music playing, maybe in the kitchen or outside, but Jack can’t be bothered to move to find out.

There are a few more people here than ordinarily would be, additional members of the SGC, all celebrating and getting drunk, all a little delirious with joy.

Defeating the Ori would do that.

“Feels like forever since we all last did this!” Cam exclaims joyfully from across the room. He has a beer in his hand and he sways slightly on his feet. “My 200th trip through the gate…” He turns and points at Daniel. “Now that, was a partaayyy….”

“Just a shame about one intsy thing though…” Vala adds, her voice sweet, but her words ever so not. She flutters her eyes at Sam, and Jack can see the other women sigh and roll her eyes.

“That was the best…” Cam is slurring his words now and slapping Teal’c’s shoulder with his spare hand.

“Oh boy,” Daniel mutters beside him and Jack can’t help but smile. It feels like some things have almost come full circle and the payback had to happen eventually. Jack pats him on the shoulder in commiseration, his eyes focusing on the two women in the group who are chatting near to Cam. At first glance it’s just too women gossiping, but Vala is clearly on a rant about something and Jack can just tell that it’s making Sam uncomfortable.

He watches as she gets up, under the guise of getting another drink, and stopping beside the two men on her way. “Daniel, save me…” She practically hisses. “If I have to hear, one more time, about big fat white weddings, I am going to kill someone….”

Daniel huffs out a laugh and pushes himself off the wall, heading towards Vala, just as Sam disappears into the kitchen.

“Trouble?” Jack asks, doing the same and following Sam into the other room. Sam opens the fridge and pulls out a few bottles, before handing him one. They stand next to each other, leaning on the counter.

“She keeps trying to pitch Martin that whole wedding idea for Wormhole Xtreme…. It’s exhausting just listening to it….”

“Not a fan, huh?” Jack starts to pick at the label on his bottle.

“She keeps talking about a massive elaborate event…” Sam sighs, before shrugging to herself. “I mean, I kind of think they would just head to Vegas and be done with it,” She utters flippantly, her words tumbling out unguarded.

The weight of them falls heavy in the stale air. Their eyes automatically snap back to each other.

Jack swallows. “Is that... something you want?” He asks cautiously, his voice quiet, his brain struggling to keep up.

Sam shrugs, knowing the words slipped out before she could think. “Well, maybe not in Vegas...” she replies softly, a small smile upon her lips. Her hands start to fiddle with her own bottle. “What about you?” She almost whispers. “Is it something you want...?”

“Yes,” Jack leans forward towards her, eyes studying hers. “I just wasn’t sure if it was something you wanted...”

Sam’s lips twitch slightly, her eyes falling down to the floor. “I’ve actually been thinking about it for the past few months...”

Jack briefly looks her up and down, assessing her before he can find his voice. “Really?” He almost squeaks. Almost.

Sam looks up to meet his eyes. She smiles and nods again. “Yeah...” she breathes out. “I wasn’t sure how to....” her voice dwindles out, a hand waving in the air and Jack can see how nervous she is.

He pauses a moment, before his hand reaches out to find hers. She studies their hands briefly before turning her hand within his, palm to palm, their fingers entwining. She flashes him a watery smile and Jack jumps forward, claiming her lips with his own.

Her lips are soft, matching him stroke for stroke and Jack knows, knows that however this ends up going down, this is not something either of them are shying away from.

They break apart, Sam biting her bottom lip to tame her grin. Jack merely doesn't bother to hide his.

“Did you...” Jack pauses a moment, “Have anywhere particular in mind?” A hand flies into the air to accompany his words.

Sam shakes her head, breathing out slowly. “I was only ever thinking about you and me... the people who we want there...”

“Something small?” Jack asks. Sam merely nods in response. “Daniel and Teal’c?”

“And Cassie,” Sam adds. “And we can’t leave out Cam and Vala...”

“Okay….” Jack nods. “Maybe we could get someone to officiate?” He adds.

Sam frowns. “Who?”

Jack shrugs. “I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure it’s not hard to do... I once heard Walter say that he did it for his brother...”

“Does Walter know?” Sam asks, a little surprised.

“Sam, he was my aide for over a year... He’s been Hank’s aide for however long you’ve been back at the SGC... I’m pretty sure he knows everything that goes on in that building...” There was a pause, as Jack watched the wheels turn in her head. “He’s never uh, mentioned anything to you?” He finally asks.

Sam shakes her head, confused, “Should he?”

“I swear he drops hints to me all the time...” Jack says upon a sigh.

Sam laughs, her hand squeezing his still in her grasp. “All the way to Washington?”

“You have no idea...” Jack huffs out. He watches as the laugh ripples through her, her head tilting back slightly and exposing her neck. Jack swallows, as all sorts of other ideas suddenly enter his mind.

“Would you wear your dress blues?” Sam asks, derailing his thoughts. Jack pauses a moment. “What?” Sam asks, watching as a series of emotions flicker across his face.

Jack shrugs a little. “I kind of like the idea of it not being military…. Me in a normal suit, you in a nice dress….”

They share a smile, one that starts out slow but soon grows bigger the longer they stare at each other.

“Me too,” Sam confesses.

“Sweet!” Jack simply grins.

He squeezes her hand again, before pulling her towards him. Her lips meet his again and they kiss slowly, Jack trapping her against the counter as her hands begin to roam through his hair.

“Oh boy,” Daniel cries for the second time that evening, as he enters the room. It was louder this time and most definitely aimed at the other two in the kitchen.

“Oh Daniel!” Vala admonishes, slapping the man gently on the chest, just as the love birds break apart. “You’re so unromantic….”

Jack pretends to shoot Daniel daggers at the interruption, while Sam astutely refuses to blush. Vala merely grins at the couple as they take up their previous positions of leaning against the counter behind them.

“We were just talking about taking a trip,” Sam states, picking up her bottle from the counter and taking a quick drink.

“Of course you were,” Daniel mutters sarcastically, rolling his eyes for dramatic effect, just as Cam and Teal’c pile into the room. Both Sam and Jack decide to ignore him.

“How would you guys all feel about a trip to the cabin?” Sam asks.

She throws Jack a look. They hadn’t discussed where, but somehow with everyone here, the location just feels right. His eyes tell her all she needs to know.

“We all have leave due over the next few weeks, right?” She adds, trying to make eye contact with Cam as he reaches into the fridge for drinks. “I mean, it would be nice for us all just to chill and celebrate together….”

Cam looks up at her, before throwing Teal’c a can of coke. “Sure,” he replies, “I’m in.”

“I think it’s a fabulous idea!” Vala exclaims, rubbing her hands together excitedly. “I’d love to go to the cabin while it’s nice weather for a change…”

Daniel glances at Teal’c as the latter tilts his head in curiosity. If he suspects anything, he doesn’t say. But then again, he’s Teal’c, he doesn’t need to. “I concur,” he finally adds.

“Daniel?” Jack asks.

There must be something in his voice, a slight lilt that only a former team member or good friend can differentiate, for Daniel narrows his eyes at Jack slightly before nodding his head. “Sure….”

Sam grins, “Great! I’ll sort the details, you guys just be there…”

The group goes back to talking amongst themselves, Vala’s excitable chatter and Cam’s drunken tone drowning out the other two.

Jack shifts, shielding the others from view and leans in to Sam’s ear, “We’re not going to be able to keep this to ourselves for long, are we?”

“Probably not,” Sam whispers back. She looks up at him and puts her arms back around his neck. “But it will be fun trying….” Her lips trail a hot breath from his ear to his lips and she leans forward to kiss him again.

In a few weeks’ time, she’ll be Mrs O’Neill and she really doesn’t care what anyone would think when she kisses him again in full view.
