Work Text:
The call came in the middle of the night and the mere fact that Niragi wasn't home when he returned from his shift shortly after two in the morning should have alerted Chishiya.
But it was still Niragi and even back in normal reality he was still somehow unpredictable.
Tired, Chishiya opened his eyes, which he had closed only what felt like seconds ago, and fumbled for his phone, blindly answering the call.
“Yeah?”
“Hey. Do you happen to know my blood type?” Chishiya heard his boyfriend ask.
“Yeah, B- but why the hell do you want to know that now in the middle of the night, Niragi? And why aren't you home yet?”
“Wait a minute. I just need to tell the nurse I was wrong.” Chishiya could hear murmuring before Niragi came back on the phone.
“Well, I may have had a little argument with some assholes on the way back and possibly one of them had a knife.” Niragi confessed.
“Which hospital are you in?” Chishiya asked next as he pushed aside the covers and stood up.
“In yours. But they'll let me go again soon anyway, so you don't have to come here.”
“Too late, I'm already on my way.” Chishiya announced as he did his best to pull the fabric of his white jacket over his loose-fitting shirt despite the phone he had clamped between his ear and shoulder. The cold of the bedroom made him shiver and he would only too gladly slip back under the warm comforter, but if he did, he would only toss and turn until Niragi was back with him, so he might as well get up.
He interrupted Niragi with one last “See you soon”, ended the phone call and hurried to get into his pants and shoes.
He found his way to the hospital even though he was overtired; he would probably even make it there blind if he had to.
As usual, the emergency room was buzzing with activity, just as Chishiya imagined it would be in a beehive.
A few of the nurses and doctors gave him a brief nod of greeting before turning their attention back to the patients.
Before he could look for Niragi, he heard him arguing loudly with someone.
Rolling his eyes at this habit, he followed his boyfriend's voice.
“Listen, I really think it would be better if you stayed here overnight.”
Chishiya really felt sorry for the newly hired nurse who was trying to talk Niragi down, and before the black-haired man could give her any more of a hard time, he stepped in between the two.
“I'll take care of it, thanks.”
She nodded and Chishiya imagined he could read something like relief on her face.
“I told you that you didn't have to come,” Niragi complained, his voice still loud.
“And I'm very sure that it was a good decision to do it after all. If only to avoid the various dismissals you could cause.”
“What am I to blame if they all have no idea?”
“That's right, how can they with six years of study?” Chishiya said ironically and reached for the clipboard on which Niragi's injuries were documented.
Various bruises, a sprained wrist and a deep stab wound that hadn't hit any organs or caused any internal bleeding.
“The knife just hit me in a stupid place,” said Niragi, sitting up so that his legs were touching the ground again.
“Can we finally go home now? I hate hospitals. It's bad enough that my boyfriend is a doctor.”
“No one's forcing you to be with me, asshole.” Chishiya said while rolling his eyes.
Niragi grinned widely and pulled Chishiya close enough by the fabric of his top so that he could pull him into a kiss with one hand on the back of his neck.
“Come on, if anything happens, I've got you with me. It's more or less the same as me staying here, isn't it?”
“Nobody can force you to stay here.” Chishiya conceded, making Niragi grin.
“I'll take that as a 'yes'. So, fill out my release papers and let's get out of here.”
Chishiya silently picked up said papers and a pen and complied, then pressed them into the hand of the nearest nurse.
“Let's go.”
Niragi followed him, albeit a little slower than usual, through the people until they stepped out into the cool night air.
“How did someone manage to hurt you in the first place?” Chishiya wanted to know, shivering as he hunched his shoulders a little.
“Like I said, it was a stupid mistake on my part. Didn't have my guard up right for a second.”
“That's not what I mean. How did you get into a fight in the first place?” Chishiya specified his question.
Niragi was silent for a few moments until he managed to come up with an explanation.
“Saw four assholes beating up a boy in the park. Could have handled them, but I wasn't expecting the fifth one from behind. God, sometimes I really miss my rifle.”
He only mumbled the last sentence, but Chishiya had heard him despite the traffic noise, which didn't subside even at night.
“I get it.”
It had taken some time for Niragi to tell him about the bullying in his school days and after that one time, he had never said another word about it.
But with this background knowledge, Chishiya understood what Niragi's motives must have been.
Back on the beach, he had once hissed 'I'll never be a fucking victim again' in Chishiya's direction after they had gone at each other's throats again.
At the time, the pale blond man hadn't understood what he was trying to say.
Now that they had been together for almost a year, he had realized it.
As soon as Niragi had taken off his bloody clothes and thrown them in the trash, he leaned exhaustedly against the nearest wall.
Chishiya was unsurprised that Niragi must have refused to put on clothes other than his own.
“Fuck I'm exhausted.”
“Your body's been through quite a bit. Sit on the bed, I'll get a new bandage.” Chishiya ordered, watching Niragi actually disappear towards the bedroom before fetching the first aid kit from the bathroom.
The black-haired man had leaned against the headboard of their bed and blinked tiredly at Chishiya as he entered.
“We can go to sleep in a minute. Just let me look at it again.” he promised and Niragi made an approving sound as he willingly turned the injured side in Chishiya's direction, giving him access to the bandage.
“Okay, no more bleeding. That's good.” Chishiya explained and hurried to apply the new snow-white bandage.
“It should be clear to you that you shouldn't sleep on this side, right?”
“I'm not completely stupid after all,” grumbled Niragi as he caught the shirt Chishiya threw at him with one arm and carefully put it on.
“Good, then I can finally sleep.” Chishiya mumbled, lying down on the bed next to his boyfriend and closing his eyes.
“Sorry for keeping you up after your long shift,” the Niragi whispered as he gently pulled the covers over Chishiya and stroked his hair.
“It's okay, I'm used to it.”
“But usually the circumstances are more pleasant.” Niragi teased him with a grin.
Without opening his eyes, the pale blond swatted at him, earning a soft laugh.
“I hate you.” he proclaimed half asleep.
“No, you love me and you know it.” Niragi said softly and then gave Chishiya a tender kiss on the forehead.
“And I love you too.”
