Summary
Xie Lian's last believer is so fervently devoted to him that he seems to think mostly in the form of prayer. That is a terrifying prospect. Xie Lian has never heard of such a case before, not even in hypotheticals, and he finds himself hoping, for his believer's sake, that there is some other explanation for this phenomenon.
Whatever the reason, a low stream of his believer's thoughts hum in the back of Xie Lian's consciousness.
His believer does not seem to be aware of it.

When Xie Lian ascends for the third time, he is welcomed back to godhood with prayers that he hadn't expected: an ongoing stream of thought from his sole remaining believer. He gathers quickly that this believer is very old, very powerful, and very, very much in love with him.
For his believer's sake, Xie Lian can cast a spell to shut the prayers out—but only if he has access to spiritual energy.

Summary
At seven years old Wei Ying is sure of two things. One day he will die and see his parents again, and the only person in the entire world that can be trusted is himself. At least, he thinks he knows these things to be true. The facts start to get fuzzy between the dogs chasing him, to the men in white and red shielding him from both the dogs and the blistering cold rain.
The facts get even more fuzzy when Xie Lian, the man in white, offers him a once in a lifetime opportunity. The opportunity to be the disciple of a rogue cultivator, just like his mother.

It is him.
Hua Cheng knows it is him, because he would know him anywhere, in any place and at any time and in any state. Knows the slope of his jaw and the silken strands of his hair, and the soft ivory of his skin and the curve of his shoulders.
Because he sees him in everything that is good and precious and divine; because he has been running after him, praying to him, talking to him in the private comfort of his mind for as long as he can remember.
Because it is him, and Hua Cheng’s soul would know his in a thousand lifetimes, under a million different stars, in the dirt and the mud just as well as on the streets of the divine capital.
Because Hua Cheng has loved him, will love him, does love him ever since he can remember.
Xie Lian is never banished from heaven, so Hua Cheng finds him there after he ascends himself at Mount Tonglu, and becomes, as always, Xie Lian's most devoted believer.

His expression was so full of gentle affection that Hua Cheng’s first impulse was to hide, but where would he possibly go? Where in the world could be safer than in the arms of his god?

He is at his side in an instant, closing his arms around Wu Ming’s flickering form only moments before he hits the ground. He should not be here, Xie Lian thinks, frantic as he desperately calls the ghost’s name, to no avail. He should not be here, bleeding out his very essence in the blinding light of the Heavens for all to see. Because he should be gone.
Or: Xie Lian's request for banishment is denied. As a result, he is there when Wu Ming ascends from Mount Tonglu.
