Magnus used to think that the most difficult thing he would ever do was say goodbye to his husband. He used to think that, having dealt with Alec's death, he would be better prepared to lose his son. He realizes now that he couldn't have been more wrong. Watching his son grow old and die opens him up to a whole new type of pain, and he doesn't know if he can survive this one.

Alec leads Magnus into his own bedroom. “I’ve decided we’re having today’s date here.”
“How unusually bold of you. Are you not even going to wine and dine me before inviting yourself into my bed?”
“Do home-made mochas not count?”
“Point taken.” Magnus practically flops onto the bed, somehow making even that look graceful, and stretches out on his back. “Have your way with me, Alexander.”
Alec joins Magnus on the bed, but before he can even start to make himself comfortable, Magnus is reaching for him. He tugs Alec close, kissing him in a way that makes his head spin, one hand slipping under Alec’s shirt, the other curling loosely around his neck. It’s warm and slow, and Alec wants to let it continue. Which is exactly why he leans back. “You need rest.”
“That’s your date idea? Putting me down for a nap? Do I truly look that pathetic?”

Maybe she needs to exhibit a little bravery of her own.
She gets up abruptly, drawing Alec's attention. She ignores Alec's ask after her as she walks purposefully to her duffel bag—the one she takes to matches with her. On one of the inner walls, there is a small zippered pouch that she's never used before this, on account of the zipper getting stuck ninety-percent of the times.
It's become particularly useful in the last two months.
