They spent the rest of the day in the school library, checking out books on the planetary system, the moon landing, and black holes. It was in that room, perusing the shelves of thin, applesauce-smeared paperbacks, that she learned about Laika.

    Laika was a small stray dog recovered from the streets of Moscow, and was the first animal to orbit the Earth in 1957. She did not survive the trip, but her sacrifice was a major contribution to science and space exploration.
