Summary
Alatus is tired of bloodshed. Maybe, now that his master—the God of Dreams—has slain an archon, she will finally let him rest. But though Decarabian is dead, the Gnosis is nowhere to be found. Thus, Alatus is sent to hunt it down—but finds something (someone) else.
Venti never asked to be a god. He just wants to keep his loved ones safe. But then he accidentally breaks a curse on a strange dream-walker, and their lives become dangerously intertwined. Venti can’t run forever. Not from the God of Dreams—not from Alatus—and not from this new reality.

That Xiao would suggest such a thing tears at Venti’s heartstrings. You don’t have anything to live for?
Zhongli is only expecting Venti to offer Xiao deathbed comfort, and it’s true that Venti guides spirits. But how can he just let someone die before they’ve learned how to live? It’s like going your whole life without ever finding out there’s a sky beyond the storm.
Xiao is succumbing to his karma. Venti refuses to let him die before he learns how to live. In a series of small mercies, they find a slightly better ending.

500 years later, Xiao travels to Mondstadt to warn Barbatos of an Abyss Order plot—but there are questions, too, twisting in his heart. Among them: Why did you save me, that night in Dihua Marsh? Why haven’t you visited since then?
And, because he knows all too well that power comes at a price: what did you pay to protect Mondstadt?

“They’re bitter,” he offers. “Ganyu eats them.”
Barbatos’s eyes go round. “Raw?” he says, astonished. “My word.” He pauses, studying the qingxin in deep contemplation. Then he pops a petal into his mouth and immediately gags.
Xiao concludes then and there that the Anemo Archon is an idiot. “I warned you,” he says, utterly unsympathetic.
“That’s true!” Barbatos laughs. He runs a thumb over the bloom, but (thankfully) doesn’t try to eat any more. “I think it’ll grow on me,” he muses, then smiles, as if he’s said something clever.

“Dear Yaksha, do you remember me?”
The boy wraps his hands around Xiao’s; even through his gloves, he can feel heat, thick and heady, sink deep into his skin. The fire licks his bones, clawing secrets in the cracks in its surface.
Xiao knows better than to let himself burn, knows that Liyue is worth more than his scorched ashes, but this is a dream. This is a dream, so there are no battles to fight, no duties to follow. The boy can strike a match on Xiao’s skin, and Xiao can watch as all his armor dissolves in smoke.
The boy tugs, and Xiao comes unmoored.
In which Xiao and Venti meet in a series of dreams. Sort of.

Kazuha closes his eyes, unsure of what to make of the fragile sensation that flutters in his chest, the faintest part of him that likes the sound of what she’s saying, that keeps reaching out when there’s nothing to find.
“I know.”
