A man tumbled in, face pale and drawn, and silence fell like the sky, spread over everything. Even the children of travelling traders, who’d until then been running between the tables and shrieking with laughter, stumbled to a stop, attuned to the tension in the air. They sought out the hands of their mothers and fathers, and fingers went white-knuckled around wooden tankards of ale.
“News from the south,” the man in the doorway panted, breathless from the sprint through the town and with the heavy weight of dread clenching in his chest. “Nilfgaard. They march north. Cintra has been taken. Queen Calanthe is dead.”
The ale on the back of Jaskier’s tongue went sour, something cold curdling in his stomach.
