“So, I’ll tell you a bit about myself and the job. Then you can decide if you want to stay to answer my questions. It is very important we both are happy with the situation before we continue.” Oh shit, it’s definitely a sex dungeon. Charles thought to himself. Although, not sure I’d mind him tying me up and- Charles shook his head slightly. Focus.
“Right, no problem.” Charles coughed slightly, still thinking about that dungeon.
“So, as I said in the advert: it is a very simple job but it is also highly unusual. I am looking for a companion, you see.”
“Like, someone to shag?” Charles blurted out before he could help himself.
“Not quite. Believe it or not I am actually able to find my own sexual partners without having to pay them.” Edwin quipped and Charles couldn’t quite tell if he’d offended him.

“Edwin, what the fuck?” Charles asked as he walked to stand next to Edwin in the near pitch-black. The only light came from the slight flickering of the paused TV- white writing suspended on a black background.
“That was not my doing.” Edwin spoke quietly. “Please tell me you ensured this house was safe before descending on it for your movies?”
“Yeah, of course I did.” Charles said huffily. “Spoke to the locals, no suspicious activity. No hauntings, no creature sightings. Just your run-off-the-mill abandoned house.”
“Then what, prey tell, is that?” Edwin asked. The clock had stopped chiming and there was an eerie quiet, broken by a soft sound coming from upstairs.

“Edwin!” the fancy woman calls, hurrying over and lifting the boy from the ground. “Oh, look at the state of you.”
“It is only a bit of dirt, Mother,” he answers, and it’s then that Charles puts it together. Edwin. Edwin Payne, the crown prince of the kingdom, and his mother, Queen Esme. Charles scrambles up so he can kneel in front of her and bow his head. It’s a good thing Mum insisted on teaching him etiquette, in case she ever got that job at the palace laundry.
“Your Majesty,” Charles stammers. He feels very, very small, and very, very poor.
“Who is this? Edwin, what were you doing with this boy?” she asks. “Did he push you down?”

It’s about three years in that Edwin happens to be looking at Charles when he yells a certain word - or, well, he’s generally looking at Charles when he scolds him, but this time he’s, like, Looking, in a paying attention sort of way. So this time he sees when Charles can’t stop the flinch, and Charles is pretty sure his eyes go kinda, like, wide and glassy, and it startles Edwin out of the yelling, because Edwin never means to upset Charles when he yells, really. Just vent his stress a little.

It's an unspoken understanding, these rules they've come up with for their game. If Edwin catches Charles, then he's lost, and has to try again another night. If Charles gets in unnoticed, then he gets to have Edwin however he wants him.
And Edwin is absolutely never allowed to let Charles in. He isn't purposefully forgetful with his locks, doesn't turn a blind eye if he catches Charles outside. Charles has to earn his victories.
Edwin doesn't underestimate Charles, doesn't let it slip from his mind that any moment they aren't working together, Charles could be playing this game of theirs.
And yet Charles still manages to catch him by surprise, again and again.

“Charles, you look…”
Charles dawns a smile that looks more like a wince. “Dashing?”
Tears sting in Edwin’s eyes. He hasn’t seen Charles look like this since the night he died. “I will fix this. I promise.” Edwin’s voice comes out shakily, but Charles looks at him and there isn’t an ounce of doubt in his eyes. He’s shivering slightly, and he thinks he sees tears in Charles’s eyes too. Edwin feels little but doubt right now. Doubt and fear.
“Of course you will,” Charles says.

Charles is infected by a monstrous plant while on a case, leaving him ill and in pain, with Edwin frantically searching for a cure before his time runs out. There only seems to be one, very simple solution, and Edwin would do anything if it means Charles is safe. He just hopes they’ll be okay in the end.

"No, it isn't!" he shouts, hands wrapped around himself and nails digging into his biceps. "Nothing about this is alright, Edwin. I hurt you. How can you even stand to look at me?”
Something in Edwin snaps at the utter despair in Charles' tone, and before he can think of the consequences, he confesses the dark secret that has been hounding him ever since Charles first pinned him down.
"I liked it," he blurts.
Charles freezes, a lack of comprehension twisting his expression as if he understands each word but can't quite grasp their meaning strung together.
"You..." he trails off.
"Liked it," Edwin finishes. He steels his nerve and presses on, determined to ease Charles' mind even if it comes at the cost of his dignity. "When you fucked me."
Charles stares.
"I liked it quite a lot actually."

Or a Fuck or Die curse turns Charles into a mindless mess of desire and puts Edwin in an impossible situation. Luckily, Edwin learns he likes it rough.

The question nearly makes Edwin drop the very important artifact he had been cautiously transporting back into its proper place on the shelf, and he is, not for the first time, appreciative of the way his ghostly form does not allow such an indignity as a blush.

Charles, at least, looks mildly sheepish.
