Summary
The poster stuck to the student noticeboard had offered the standard pay for a senior teacher, to anyone willing to take a posting at a remote school. It was a five-year contract, and on top of the pay you got food and board, plus transport paid and organised.
It wasn't just the pay, though, for me. I was curious, it had always been my greatest weakness. I'd been an insufferable child, always begging my parents for books. When I finished school, and my parents were thinking of sending me to do factory work for a couple of years, I argued them round to the benefits of continuing my education. I wanted to know how people were inside, what they thought, how the world worked.
Step one had been presented to me on a poster, and it came with such generous pay that I could send some home to my parents.
And that is how I found myself on the back of a camel, winding along a desert track, somewhere in the middle of the Hutabarrah.
