Summary
“I’m fine,” she says stiffly, and he sighs, rubs the back of his neck, peers up at her.
“It’s alright-”
“I’m fine.”
Her voice is too loud in the icy darkness of their kitchen. Joel stares at her a second longer, throat bobbing, lips pressed thin. “Alright,” he says at last. “But you - if you aren’t, you can tell me. Okay?”

During a hard week of winter, black outs roll across Jackson, and one of Ellie's childhood fears rears its head.
Luckily - she has Joel.

Summary
Without him consciously telling them to, his knees bend, and his arms are held open wide. Ellie crashes into his chest with a screech.
“What all d’ya got there, kiddo?” He asks, standing and swinging her as she struggles to grip his sleeve with her empty hand.
“Lotsa flowers. Mama says they’re wild, like me,” she explains excitedly.
“Wildflowers, huh?” Joel asks, setting her down and crouching in front of her as she releases her sweaty grip on the smushed, lifeless stems of her little bouquet, transferring them to his much larger palm.
He looks down at the flowers, colorful and already starting to wilt. Crushed in the hands of a rambunctious little girl before they could die on their own accord in the sun once their time was up. To be picked with love and excitement, he thinks, is a much better fate.
or, some much-needed little ellie fluff featuring wildflowers, great parents, and some mild angsty joel feelings.

Summary
It’s Tess’s turn to do the laundry, and one of her so-called resolutions had been to complain less about doing the washing, so she dumps their clothes out of the hamper into the basket, collecting loose articles of clothing from the floor and the bathroom, and bringing it downstairs to the machine.
Their machine had gotten finicky as the years passed, and after nearly six years in Jackson, Tess knew all of its quirks by heart. She opens the lid, sticking the square of paper beneath one corner to keep it upright, and began to root through the clothes for all of their jeans. Out of habit she makes sure to check the pockets of each pair before tossing them into the machine- it wasn’t like pre-outbreak, where there would be loose change or bubblegum wrappers or bobby pins.
Then, in the last pair- one of Joel’s- she finds the folded-up piece of journal paper.
