    Summary

“Izzy,” said Alma again, shifting in an utterly heart-stopping fashion on the tottering stool until she was seated, mercifully in the appropriate fashion. “Are you coming with us to see the eclipse?”
Izzy looked up, eyebrows raised. “Oh, was that today? Must not have put it on my calendar. Why, is it important?”
Alma favored him with a roll of the eyes. They were undeniably Stede's eyes. An angel or demon somewhere created Stede Bonnet and crafted him to be just beautiful enough to be a threat, just smart enough to be dangerous, and just virile enough to have two children with his eyes, nose and laugh. Sometimes Izzy was reminded of these things and knew that wherever that celestial being was, it’d spent the last two years laughing at the plight of one Israel Hands.

The sun disappears from the sky, and Izzy Hands bears witness--but that's not the whole story, is it?

    Bookmarker's Notes

"Polaris, Izzy learned later in life, was so very bright because it was actually three stars clustered together." WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

this fic is so deeply moving in the way that it mingles the 'daily' and the 'divine.' it's a simple (and funny!) slice-of-life story, but it also incorporates these big moments of sublime revelation -- which is of course fitting for its premise, aka stede and his big old family go out on their yacht to look at the 2024 solar eclipse. it moves between these two registers of high and low very easily, almost imperceptibly, so that everything feels simultaneously deep and everyday. super cool!

stede and ed each get multiple lines here that vibrate with perfect characterization, and mary, doug, and the kids also get to the steal the show more than once. but the piece de resistance is absolutely izzy's narration, which is bone-dry, incisive... and despite it all, marvelously sentimental. 🥲

    straight rights!!!

andor software running on clone wars hardware. i love the feeling of problem-solving and maneuvering in this one; it lends a really satisfying, one-thing-after-another quality to the story, which balances small details with larger plot moves in a very skillful way. i also love the post-order-66 worldbuilding, co-mingling familiar faces and new authoritarian realities. and i ALSO love all the depth that this fic gives to MY GIRL riyo chuchi, amen!!

    Bookmarker's Notes

i love the intensity and beauty and love overflowing in this story... it somehow manages to keep everyone in-character (canon-wise, with all their humor and quirks) while exploring the world of ed and izzy wayyyyyyy before ofmd, with all the grit and violence that implies. what results is somehow one of the most thorough and heartfelt depictions of child-raising i've ever encountered. wow wow wow!

two things here that i especially love, amongst everything else in these chapters: 1) malachi, the child oc at the heart of this story, is so lively and specific. he changes everyone around him, and never in trite or simple ways!! he's such a good foil for both izzy and ed, as well as (of course!) being an engrossing character in his own right. and 2) the structure of this fic is so rewarding. i love all the detail we get about life on the queen anne's revenge. i love how hard the characters work to make space for affection and accommodation in this story, without denying how tough and miserable a world this pirate's life can be. i love how everything feels real and toothy and interesting. i mean, there's a section in here that just straight-up deserves like a thesis title, i was absolutely out here calling it "Archipelagic Judaisms: Curaçao 1685-1687, a Case Study" it's sooooooo lush and vivid

a note on warnings: the tags are apropos (especially re: graphic depictions of childbirth, injury, violence, etc.) and note that ed and izzy's relationship gets tough here, and goes through stages of deep hurt and healing through the fic.

a note on completion: this fic is marked as incomplete, but i think it ends in a really satisfying and rewarding spot. just know that stede has not arrived, so this is squarely in edizzy territory only.

    Summary

Stede and Ed's relationship ended months ago, but Stede hasn't been able to let it go. He's amazed when Ed agrees to participate in The Ex-House with him, sharing a tiny house on live television for six weeks to win the grand prize.

“Hello, Edward!” he says, forcing brightness. Remembers to look at his face - two seconds at a time is perfectly acceptable, look at the face, not directly into the eyes - tries to remember to turn his lips up into a friendly smile. Behind Ed, the door whooshes closed again and leaves them in silence.

Ed’s fully clad in leather, which is always a good look for him. Slight hint of eyeliner. One arm bare, showing off the winding snake tattooed into his skin. Beard trimmed short. Hair up, as well, properly styled. Small silver dagger earring dangling from one ear.

He looks unapproachably hot. The kind of guy that would skim over Stede without a second glance. The kind of guy that would sniff out Stede’s oddness in a second and push Stede down as a way to lift himself up. There are probably people watching on their televisions right now, wondering how the hell the two people in this room were ever together in the first place.

    Bookmarker's Notes

do you ever find a fic that just makes you feel So Seen?? 😭

never have i ever read any story that so completely captures the feeling of being perceived by others as 'fussy'/difficult/particular: the way that this can erode your confidence, and the way that it can lead to you coming up with elaborate ways to avoid being perceived like that, or carefully strategizing how to seek accommodations when it seems they won't be given if you just ask. i haven't encountered many representations of that, and stede and ed's relationship here provides such a fruitful site to explore it. i really admire the author's consideration of how stede's neurodivergence and sexuality overlap, how ed's past experience with romance (and lack thereof) drives his persona, and how allllllllll of this limits what stede and ed believe they can expect from each other, resulting in delicious misunderstandings. 😈 the miscommunication is grounded in such excellent character work that i was rubbing my hands together in delight the whole time. yay yay yay yay yippee!!

and of course expect excellent prose and plotting; i can't find an example of a reality show that fits this exact model, so i am doubly impressed by how fleshed-out the premise feels, and the way that it so fully incorporates ofmd-ness (pirate punishment week, i'm looking at you).

warnings here for discussions of ableism, and that perfect tag: "the inherent dubcon of trying to act to allosexual timeframes when you are not allo"
