What the hell did it matter to him if he-- he couldn’t even put it into words in his head. If he were to look away from the women his colleagues desired, perhaps. If he were to feel more flushed at seeing Piandao’s forearms, straining with the billows, hands blackened by grease, his hair falling loose from his knot.

Summary
He knew Hakoda thought often of home, too, when Bato rose in the early hours to relieve Hakoda for precious few hours of sleep. He often found him standing on the prow, face turned to the southern sky to try and glimpse those familiar constellations before the sun had risen too far.
Sometimes, Bato would lean back against the side of the ship across from Hakoda, watching his silhouette in the soft dusk light, heart aching for him.

Summary
Jet’s first mistake, after the new teacher came, was talking about him to Smellerbee and Longshot. There wasn’t anyone else for him to talk about him to, but still. Smellerbee had looked at Longshot, and Longshot looked back at Smellerbee after Jet explained how his new teacher had noticed him having a hard time with the wheel, given his healing hip, and said he would think of suggestions for him.

Blackbeard stares at him with vacant eyes. Jesus. Lucius is viscerally reminded of the man's dead-eyed look before he pushed him overboard.
"Does it feel like the right choice for you? Are we happy with it?"
"Do you have a fever?" Blackbeard asks, voice hoarse.
Lucius cocks his head and says, "Don't think so. Do I look hot?" He winks.
Blackbeard lifts his hand and presses his fingers roughly against Lucius' forehead.
"What are you—"
"No fever," Blackbeard grunts and draws back. "Good. Didn't want to cut off your fucking hand."
Lucius drawls, "I'm touched."
Or: Lucius survives. For better or for worse.
