Summary
The stars glitter overhead, blinking in and out as the swaying branches of the trees pass over them like dark fingers reaching across the sky. A streak of light passes overhead, a comet maybe, or a satellite, something bright and fleeting that seems to tear a hole through the velvet – and then the light comes to rest directly on his face. Everything goes blinding white, searing and painful. It hurts too much to keep his eyes open, so he squeezes them shut only to see red through his eyelids.
The light eventually passes and he opens his eyes again in a daze, blinking rapidly to clear away the bright splotches of white and purple that bloom and fade across his eyes, unfurling like flowers. Joel is there suddenly, much closer than he was before, his face lit up harshly from beneath by someone's flashlight. Every line of his face looks darker and deeper than it should be, the creases around his eyes like canyons, the hollows of his cheeks shadowed and gaunt, his brow furrowed with worry.
And she's there, too, just behind the glow of the flashlight, watching with her glittering eyes that catch the glow of the beam and hold it, twin galaxies all their own.

“It’s okay. I know a guy.” Ellie likes talking about Joel like he’s her mob lackey or something. Makes everything feel a little less looming and leering and lethal. She called Joel "a guy" when it came to getting an extra slice of pie or getting outside of Jackson's walls when she needed a day off of school, when she couldn’t fucking stomach it anymore. He told her to cut it out whenever she called him that. It was a bit. She liked all of their bits these days. “He’ll get you out too.”
“I’m Ellie," she volunteers though she doesn't want to. This woman isn’t an enemy. She’s as caged in as Ellie, worn down to the point that she barely had her wits left about her. There was a look in people’s eyes when they got that way, when they’d started giving up hope. Ellie would fucking know.
The woman shakes something loose from her bones, digs her teeth against her lip before she answers, “I’m Sarah.”
Ellie snorts. “Yeah,” she says with only the edges of humor clinging on. “He’ll definitely fucking save you.”
