    Summary

    Velaris is home, in every way that should matter. Still, at night, Cassian sometimes looks up at the sky and feels the old, quiet panic move beneath his ribs. He’s General of the Night Court’s armies, the Lord of Bloodshed, Carynthian, bastard-born son of a nameless Illyrian woman whose face has been blurred by time. He has survived wars, has been on battlefields so soaked with blood he was afraid he’d never emerge. He has survived losing friends, gaining brothers, and failing people important to him. He’s all that, but still, at times, being in Velaris seems to be the thing that can undo him.

    Because there are too many lights, and all of them soften the sky until the stars blur or vanish entirely. Whole constellations disappear above the city, whole stretches of the heavens going missing. Ancient markers, old routes, and familiar shapes, some of which once held him steady through hunger and cold and fear, end up hidden beneath the pretty golden haze of civilization.

    —————

    Nesta finds Cassian after a hard day in Illyria, and he tells her more about Illyria's stories of the sky and the stars.

    She focused on eating her olive, trying to ignore him.

    “Rough day?” he asked, clearly not trying to ignore her.

    She sighed deeply, figuring every effort to not acknowledge him would be futile. “Very original.”

    “I’m only warming up, sweetheart.” He signaled the bartender. “Whatever she’s having, and a beer. On me.”

    “I don’t let strangers buy me drinks.”

    “Excellent.” He didn’t wave the bartender off. “Cassian.”

    Nesta turned her head slowly, and gave him the look that had made grown men apologize for being in her vicinity before. He simply smiled like she was the first ray of warm sunshine after a long, dark winter.

    He had his hand extended towards her and watched her, looking almost hopeful.

    She held the his gaze a beat longer. The third martini arrived, frosted and perfect. Her father’s voice was still ringing in her ears and Feyre was probably drafting text number forty-two. The day had already gone to hell. What was another grave mistake anyway?

    —————

    Nesta has a one night stand with Cassian, who later turns up at the most unexpected moment.

    Summary

    A Court of Silver Flames, somewhere between the end of Chapter 50 and beginning of Chapter 51, after the infamous hike where Nesta breaks down at the lake. A missing scene, vulnerable and with some spice towards the end!
    ~~~~~~~~
    The air around them was smoky and fragrant from the simmering dish, and as warm and golden as the sun lowering on the horizon.
    Cassian braced his feet wider as Nesta clung to him, her slender arms clasped around his middle, just beneath the knot of his wings. Their breathing came together, deep and slow. His wings pulled closer to his body as a gust of wind cut through the camp and Nesta’s thumb brushed against the thin, sensitive membrane.
    He shuddered.
    “Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean-”.
    “Shh, it’s fine. You’re hungry?” He smoothed her hair as she pulled away, careful not to bump his wings again.
    He smiled when she nodded.
    He also squashed the foolish hope that maybe, one day, she would prepare food for him too.
