Eadwulf can’t stop staring at the blood. He reaches up, trembling, breathing through the spasms, and wipes the corner of Essek’s mouth with his left thumb. The blood is fresh, still hot. “Did she hurt you?”
“That doesn’t matter now, does it?” Essek doesn’t flinch away from the contact. Bren has made him more comfortable in his own skin. When they’d first met, they could barely touch. “She’s dead. And you’re being foolish.”
“I’m always foolish.”
Essek narrows his eyes. “You can lie to your master so she fucks you in the way you like, and you can lie to Beauregard because she doesn’t have time to confront you about it right now, but don’t lie to me. We’ve done terrible things together, Eadwulf Grieve, and I have very little to lose. Don’t insult me.”

Teor makes a disagreeing noise. At the time, Kattigan finds it strangely similar to an earthquake's rumble. Later on, he'll learn that it's the sound that heralds a stupid oath, or a horribly selfless act of heroism - a low, steady purr that means no, I am worried about it. I am worried about you.
