Summary
He tries to think of his wife and children, safely abroad and out of harm's way. However, the strained happy memories are shattered by another explosion, this time from several streets away. He pulls his coat over his head, one of Ivors less flamboyant ones that he left several summers ago, and tucks his knees up to his chest. For all the egotistical nonsense he spouts at work, the prospect of being blown apart at any moment steamrolls any wish to seem confident or strong. Right now, all he cares about is surviving the night.

There had been something in his brain that had understood the difference between work and leisure, and had refused to cross those wires. Until Charlie, apparently. There was nothing about him that spoke to Monty’s usual type: he was gangly and nervous with a brain that went a mile a minute, not the strong, cocky, and stupid type he’d usually go for. But he wasn’t unattractive, far from it. And something about his anxious stammering had drawn Monty in.

There is something wrong with one (1) Ewen Montagu.
The change came after that little operation he worked on ended. He got quieter, less talkative, and his fuse got shorter. No one talked about Bug Boy or the new girl in the typing pool around him, because if it was any bit negative he would snap.
No one knows what happened (because no one on the team will talk about it), but they know somethings wrong and it’s really starting to disrupt the workflow of MI5.

But Monty came in one morning, tightly gripping a piece of paper decorated with tight, girlish cursive, and Hester could have sworn there were tears in his eyes.
“Are you alright, Montagu?" She asked him, gently reaching out a hand and placing it on his shoulder, Monty leapt a foot in the air.
“Yes.” He cleared his throat. “Better than ever.”

Summary
There was a reason it had been so long since he had allowed himself the luxury of letting his guard down and this was it. As soon he ripped off the mask of ‘Monty’ and allowed himself to be anything but confident and self assured, everything came crashing down. Monty had been built out of necessity and pure instinct to survive, his charm and confidence acting as a barrier for the scared and confused person beneath. Without Monty, Ewen didn’t know who he was. All he knew was that he was safer as Monty than Ewen. Monty had friends, Ewen would even go as far to say he was popular. Anyone who got close to Ewen ended up leaving scars that he feared would never truly heal. Yes, it was better to be fake and accepted than the alternative.
Monty is struggling with the pressure of keeping Operation Mincemeat on track.

Charlie’s chest ached because, even enough drinks in to be happy to talk to anyone about anything, Monty looked at him skeptically. “Well, I’m drinking on the clock, so. Never better.”
It was such a Monty answer. So was the way that he leaned forward a bit, just into Charlie’s space. “Not that it’s not always a pleasure. But do you need something? Someone really should make sure that Jean is alright dealing with Prezzo and that spiked cider.”
What did Charlie say in response to that? I think you’re drinking too much for an office holiday party. I worry you’re going to say the wrong thing to the wrong person. I’m worried you’ll get hurt. I know wine makes you sleepy. I know you probably haven’t eaten enough today. I know that you’re just as breakable as the rest of us on the inside, and the idea of anyone else knowing that makes me want to die.
He said – “Walk me home.”

Summary
The black hole of shame that opened up beneath his chair might have swallowed him whole, if firm hands hadn’t materialised upon his shoulders. Monty’s hand found his under the table once he’d pulled up a chair, taking an exaggerated breath which Charles tried to consciously mirror. The black hole ebbed a little. He didn’t let go, just in case.
Yet Charles barely saw Monty outside of their shared duties in the office. What had become a slow waltz over the last several months, of bar crawls and shared meals and finishing paperwork in Monty’s living room when the winter chill made the basement uninhabitable, had suddenly ceased to exist.
