As if sensing his plans, the others in the room moved to flank him, blocking off his path to the room’s exit. Jahan’s mind raced to come up with an escape plan, and it was not looking good. “I’m giving you one chance to reconsider,” Jahan said, keeping his voice level and commanding. “Step aside.”
“Such fire in your eyes,” the traitor murmured. “Yet you are only one man, Your Majesty. You’re smart enough to count the odds and see that they are against you.”
“That doesn’t mean I’m going to lay down and die at your feet.”

For the first time, the sword in his hand felt…frail. Like one wrong move would have it shattering, shards of metal flying through the air like flower petals after a storm. Mujin was pretty sure the only reason it (and he) was in one piece was the kingdom’s magic coursing through it, its binding runes pulsing with a stuttering glow. But even that wouldn’t be enough.
He’d underestimated the enemy. He thought he’d have more time.
Such a stupid mistake.

Mingi stills. “How the hell do you know about the lake-house?”
“Can I come to you?” Yunho asks, evading Mingi’s question. He sounds tired. Mingi picks up on the hesitance, too, as if he’s already beating himself up about asking.
Then Yunho actually walks himself back. “Fuck— I— uh, I’m really sor—”
“Stay on the line while I send you the address,” Mingi says. He switches Yunho to loud-speaker and texts him the details.
Mingi watches as Yunho’s read receipt comes on. There’s some movement then, as if Yunho’s gotten up and out. “I’ll be there in couple of hours.”

“Oh, hey, puppy,” the man crooned, shuffling a little bit closer and crouching down. He held out his hand for Mingi to sniff. “Hello, sweetheart.”
