"You went outside," Caitlyn says. "How was it?"
How was it? How was the earth beneath her feet, the sky stretching out above her as far as she can see, the birds already out and about? The grass soft and wet, the flowers asleep but fragrant? The early morning sun still hidden behind the trees, a stray ray peeking out from between the leaves?
"Nice," Vi says. "It's cool out."
Caitlyn's eye lingers on her today as it always does. She steps closer, the face towel tossed aside. For a moment Vi thinks Caitlyn might kiss her, but a thumb darts out instead to the corner of her mouth, brushing away a stray crumb she must have missed.

Summary
She resists the urge to check the watch on her wrist. She checked it not two minutes ago. She knows this. She’s also not sure what this says about the party if it’s taking him fifteen minutes to get two fresh drinks. She tries her very best to not sigh into the glass. It would be unbecoming, she can hear the words threaded through with laughter. Even if we are having an absolutely horrid time, Caitlyn, we mustn’t let random strangers know.
She takes a long, slow breath, takes stock of her situation, alone again, and remembers now why she never quite liked parties before Mel.

"Someone's feeling brave today," Vi says, twiddling her very large thumbs together. The machinery hums as it always does, a low blue glow splashing against the damp walls of the alleyway.
"Could say that about you," the thug says, muzzle of a sawn-off shotgun floating about as he gesticulates. "Coming all the way down here without backup."
Such poor muzzle discipline, she can almost hear the sniff in Caitlyn's voice in her head. She smiles, can't help it. "What can I say," Vi grins, baring her canines. "Sometimes we don't need the scary one."

Summary
Vi spends a moment watching, taking in the way the light that streams out from the ballroom dances over the creases of Caitlyn's uniform, the stray strands of her hair come free from the ponytail, the long fingers that keep a loose grip on the glass of bubbly almost done. She drinks in the slightest upturn of Caitlyn's lips, luxuriating almost in the knowledge that Caitlyn is having a good enough time to not have spotted her yet.
The moment does not last.
That one eye flicks up to her and now that smile grows.
"Ten years," Caitlyn says, voice drifting over. "Yet I learn a new thing about you every day."

"I want you to use me while I sleep," Vi had said one night, unable to look Caitlyn in the eye as she said it. It wasn't the wildest request Vi had ever made, but it was one of the more unique ones. "I think it's hot."
Caitlyn hasn't been brave enough to try it, even with Vi's reassurance. It always felt like she was crossing a line. But she thinks she understands it now, Vi here for the taking. Caitlyn sheds her gloves, followed by her work uniform, and crawls into bed.

And then Lux noticed something else – the painting that hung above the couch.
It was all strong colors and broken perspective that blended together into shapes that were clear and recognizable, but bordering on abstract. An ocean, swirls of blue on top of blue. A ship. A city on the background, a thin layer of white to represent the fog. And the lights, blurry, spilling over foreground and background like liquid.
A distinctively expressionist piece, Lux thought, fascinated.
And the signature at the bottom – that sharp ‘K’ that looked more like a sideways ‘V’, contrasting with the circular brush strokes above it.
“Huh.” Lux said, and brushed her fingers against the canvas, feeling the rough texture. “What do you know.”
