Something tells him that Evans isn’t dead. If he is, Tom will personally take it upon himself to revive him just so that he can find out why he was able to use his wand and where he learned to duel that way. If he truly can’t bring Evans back, well, Tom could always start making his first Horcrux early.
“Accio wand.” As the smoke clears, his yew comes. It’s warm in his hand and pulses steadily as Evans’ body twitches. The boy is alive.
Tom hates him.
Never has he been so aware of his heartbeat until now.
Tom wants him.
Harry doesn’t mean to end up in 1942 but he’s determined to find a way back. In the meantime, he keeps his head down and stays out of Tom Riddle’s notice. Until Grindelwald attacks Hogsmeade and he accidentally uses Tom’s wand instead of his own.

Summary

No one was surprised when Tom Riddle, Head Boy, Captain of the Dueling Club, and overall adored student, was selected as the Hogwarts Champion. Nor was anyone surprised when Albus Dumbledore, prodigy and magical genius, was chosen from Beauxbatons, and Gellert Grindelwald, with his notorious reputation, chosen from Durmstrang.
Everyone was very surprised, however, when a Fourth Champion was chosen, and Harry James Potter's name came bursting out of the flames as well.
