Summary
In canon, prior to the events of the game, Kate Marsh had attended a party where she was drugged, kidnapped by Nathan, assaulted, then dumped back in her room. The resulting humiliation from the viral video taken of her at the party, coupled with all the bullying she suffered before, drove her to attempt suicide. Depending on several factors, Max can either successfully rescue Kate, and escort her from the roof so she can recover, or she could fail, and Kate would die.
But, what if Kate wasn't the one who went to the party? What if Max attended instead? How would events have changed?

Summary
In traditional settings, five steps of proper courting were to be followed and accepted by any Beta or Omega before romantic interest can be expressed. His father had drilled that into Noctis’ head before he’d even presented.
Nowadays, properly stepped courting wasn’t necessarily commonplace, usually only seen in romantic films or those shitty novels Gladio tended to read while he had the prince doing warm ups. Basically everyone knew what they were, but it wasn’t as strictly necessary that they be followed.
Even if this wasn’t necessarily required, there was a strange part of Noctis that wanted to court Prompto. He deserved it, after all, to have everything done right, doted over the way that Omegas before him had been.
_____Because of his status, Noctis needs to go about courting very carefully. Despite the work he puts towards it, it doesn't quite seem like Prompto is taking the hint.

The girl’s eyes snapped up, panicked. She spared a second to glance down at the man in front of her, her eyes racing up and then looked at Joel with the exact same type of terror, before emerging with something in her hands.
Joel watched, immediately suspecting a gun. “Whoa, now-”
The girl lifted her hands up, revealing an old knife. She smeared the tears on her cheeks away, trying to seem bigger than she was, but it didn’t work.
She was a terrified kid.
The urgency in Joel’s expression blinked. “Hey,” He repeated, his voice painted soft, though he didn’t let himself hear it. The girl just stared up at him with her knife, not realizing the tremble of her own grip or the violent shakes that tore through her entire, bare body. He just realized that now. Only her knees were covering her, along with the clearly torn pair of underclothes on her lower half. She cringed under his eyes. “It’s okay,” He tried. “I’m not gon’ hurt you.”
The girl didn’t even blink. She just stared up through her tears, terrified of him.
Fuck.
TLDR: Joel finds a traumatized Ellie on the side of the road. He's immediately soft. Meanwhile, she has to learn how to trust him.
