“But you better quit it with the smart-ass comments,” Michael says, “because then I will actually hit you.”

But Luke can’t help it. Because Michael always makes himself the center of gravity. He was in Luke’s school and then Jack’s shop and then their house and then the band. He’s everywhere. He always has been. Luke can’t do anything to stop it. He’s like bacteria. Or the flu. Or cancer, most succinctly.

“Please don’t,” is the only thing Luke manages, eyes crawling over every inch of Michael’s grit jaw for penance.

Luke's in Catholic school and Michael's a mechanic. They've hated each other since they were kids. That doesn't go away once they start hooking up all the time.

Or, an early-2000s AU featuring DIY garage bands, MySpace stalking, unsanitary stick-and-pokes, and a slightly concerning psychosexual fixation on each other.

    Summary

Michael just doesn’t understand what it’s like to meet someone and feel such an instant, electrifying connection. He’s never been so drawn to someone that he resorts to such tactics. Ashton doesn’t tell him that, doesn’t want to be on the receiving end on his overdramatic pouts and pained eyes, but it’s the truth. At the end of the day, Ashton knows his feelings are more than just attraction - he couldn’t stop watching Calum if he tried.

“And he can’t see you through the window?" Michael asks.

“Not at all.” Ashton watches as Calum rips open an envelope, smiling at the card he finds inside. It makes Ashton grin too. “I’ve waved to him, got no response. He’s fucked his friend twice now, and I’ve been right here watching.” Michael laughs. “Not like that. I just happened to glance over and - ”

“Oh, you just happened to, huh?"

    -

After moving into his new apartment, Ashton realizes that his neighbor never closes his curtains.

“You’re home, therefore available. You see Ashton on a near-daily basis,” Michael deadpans. Calum considers pointing out that most of his time with Ashton is on the clock, but refrains and accepts his fate.

“Yeah, okay. We’ll watch them.” Calum knows he’s being difficult. It’s only an afternoon, and the vinyls can wait. Deciding this is an opportunity to become the kids’ favorite uncle over Ashton, he begins to search the house for anything that needs to be moved to a higher shelf.

    -

Michael's babysitter cancels on him last-minute, and what kind of uncle would Calum be if he said no to his nieces?

    Summary

Ashton is a terrible person, that much he knows. But he’s a terrible person with hard deadlines, and after all of them have passed, maybe he can try to make a better impression on his hot, gay upstairs neighbors.

Although, his new neighbor has likely crafted an Ashton-looking villain inside his head, because while he may be the asshole who can’t keep it down, Ashton’s the asshole who told him to shut up— and now, Ashton really can’t be sure which one of those monikers is worse.

A 2004-snapshot story, featuring failed elections, broadband internet, flip phones, misunderstandings, and a long overdue dinner for two.
