“A spar?” Mydei repeats Phainon’s request with the suggestion of a scoff in his voice, though he is already flexing his fingers in his gauntlets, checking that they’re secure. The metal clinks quietly from the motion, and Phainon just smiles. “For how long, Deliverer? Some of us have things to do.”
“To first blood,” Phainon says, so readily that he must have had his answer prepared. And then the edge of his smile quirks to smugness, in the way makes Mydei’s hands itch to do something about it. “Try not to let it end too quickly, will you?”
Mydei’s eyes narrow at him, but he still turns and begins to stride towards the Okhema sparring grounds. He can practically hear the delighted grin in the way Phainon’s footsteps follow right at his heels. “Fine,” he says over his shoulder. It’s a challenge, then - pain is negligible before the path to victory, and Mydei has no qualms in bleeding so long as he can repay the strike, but Phainon is asking the opposite of him. “You do the same.”

"A fascinating question, Doctor. As it happens, we've caught wind that Odessa has managed to snag some portion of an Emanator of Abundance. It would be in the IPC's best interests to obtain it before anyone else, as you know, and who better to act in the IPC's stead than Veritas Ratio, hm? We need to make good use of you while we still have you, of course, so when the Emanator remnant is attained, who better to observe and take notes on the piece than yourself?" Lady Jade waited for a moment. "We will expect thorough notes, of course. But why refuse? We've worked so hard to set this up and all it will take is one night in Odessa."
A simple auction leaves Veritas Ratio and Aventurine of Strategems weaving through a city filled with debauchery and deadly gambles. With little time to find and acquire the item they set out to win, their situation becomes a gamble itself: Survive, and take their winnings with them, or die in the utopia of all gamblers, where their pitiful loss will echo throughout the ages.
