Summary
He began to wake. Somewhere far off, in the deepest recesses of his consciousness, he could hear a faint voice, muffled by the ringing in his ears. He couldn't make out the words, couldn't even tell whose voice it was, and when he tried to open his eyes, pain hit him. Sharp, searing pain that split his chest in two, as if acid had been poured over a fresh burn.
The sudden agony knocked the breath from his lungs, leaving him gasping in ragged, desperate bursts, as if his lungs were trying to claw in as much air as possible. He could feel those very lungs burning, could feel his heart hammering harder and harder, whether from the terror of the unknown or from the pain itself, he couldn't tell.
He wanted to roll over. Sit up. Stand. Do something to figure out where he was and what was happening, when suddenly a hand landed on his shoulder — gentle, but firm.
"Hey, hey, easy, easy," came a worried voice from beside him. "You're safe. It's alright."
