Summary
Approximately nothing has gone the way it was supposed to in the last year. Bradley was never supposed to have left home, or gone to college instead of the Academy. She wasn't supposed to have met a handsome stranger or let him leave the way she did. She sure as hell was not supposed to be crying on her living room floor, staring at a stick exposing a reality she hadn't let herself consider.
She can't help but be reminded again of Murphy's Law, that old saying Mav had placed so much faith in. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.
Maverick had been right about one thing, that's for sure.
Or: Bradley and Jake meet by chance before the Navy, before Bradley transitions, before everything. Finding their way back to each other is a little more complicated.

Summary
It's not that Jake loves Rooster, because he doesn't. It's the knowledge that whatever Rooster sees when he looks at Jake, it's not something he wants to keep around. Jake should be used to it by now, the effect he has on people. He has a big mouth and an even bigger ego, things that most people can't handle once they realise there's no soft centre underneath. He's bitter right down to the bones, snarky and brash and a little too much for everyone.
Love would require a level of attachment that no one has ever held for Jake.

"That's it?" Bradley asks into Jake's shoulder. "You're not angry?"
Jake pulls away so he can look at Bradley, giving him space to breathe again. "Of course not."
It's wrong, all wrong. Bradley wishes more than anything that Jake would drop the act, scream at Bradley the way he deserves. Instead, Jake kisses his forehead. "I'm not angry, darlin'. You came home, didn't you?"
Bradley doesn't have the heart to disagree.

"Group thing?" Maverick asks, already digging into his food.
"Pairs," Bradley says. He shrugs. "Twenty-four hours. How bad can it be?"

Usually, Bradley was better at shoving these feelings down. That didn't mean that they wouldn't ever creep up on him from time to time.
A flash of warm skin beneath his hands here, soft murmurs over a table set for two there, a broken hand and a twisted knife and all the nasty truths that he, regrettably, would accept if it meant that he had the sweeter parts back. Jake's in rare form tonight, chattering over a game of darts, winning without trying but reeling in the signature smarmy attitude. Coyote stands at his side and laughs at something he’s said.
Jealousy simmers in Bradley's gut and spreads through his chest; nobody but him should know that Jake is funny, even when he’s not making his jokes at someone else's expense. Those softer sides should be all his own to know and hoard.

"What the fuck," Jake says in a voice that sounds all kinds of incorrect, pressing a hand to his thundering heart. In the mirror, Bradley's mouth moves too. His hand presses against his chest too. Jake blinks; so does Bradley.
"What the fuck," he repeats, thickly. In the mirror, Bradley echoes him perfectly. Jake looks down at himself, heart in his throat and starting to feel a little thin around the edges as adrenaline sets him trembling. Those hands aren't his, and nor is the stomach he runs them over. The sweats low on his hips don't belong to him.
Because all of them belong to one Bradley fucking Bradshaw.
