Summary
Essek could not tear his gaze from Caleb. If he did so, he feared the man might disappear.
The Nein were all standing in the threshold of the Brenatto's home, and his partner looked a nervous, diminished shadow of the man Essek abandoned in the Folding Halls of Halas. Caleb stood with his back hunched and hands trembling by his sides. The rest of the Nein were so engrossed in Veth's newborn son, and likely confident that Caleb had endured far worse, that they hardly noticed their rescued friend crumbling beside them.
Essek approached Caleb and tried to catch his haunted gaze, dim blue eyes locked in place. Caleb hardly seemed to notice him.
"Caleb," he murmured. When he placed a hand on Caleb's shoulder, the man flinched as if struck. The words "Are you alright?" died on his tongue, clearly useless. Instead, Essek could only watch as Caleb's expression contorted into one of pure agony.
A heartfelt epilogue to PROJEKT Funball where Essek and Caleb are grappling with the consequences of their actions and find answers in each other.

Summary
“You are being gentle with him.”
Essek stills his hand on Frumpkin’s back, arching a questioning eyebrow. Frumpkin looks over his shoulder in indignant protest, but before he can so much as merp, Caleb has scooped him into his lap. The cat’s eyes fall closed with contentment as Caleb takes his face in both hands and rubs his thumbs in firm circles.
“Cats are not so fragile,” he explains. “They like a little bit of-- here.”
And then Caleb reaches out and takes his hand, and Essek is afraid to breathe.
