Summary
Vanderohe is brash, he is realistic, he is well aware therefore that he’s slumped on a pile of money under a casino in a soon to be flattened city with nothing but the promise of oxygen starvation to look forward to, and he’s rapidly drawing these conclusions faster than he can go through a bottle of whisky.
Which is really kind of impressive. The whisky bit, not the dying part.
That parts kind of shit if he’s honest.
---
Or the one where we throw Vanderohe into a time loop to fix canon for us.

Summary
By now, Vanderohe is officially the person responsible to keep Dieter alive and safe, which apparently also means sharing a tent with him. And a bed. Surprisingly Vanderohe doesn’t mind as much as he would expect.

Summary
He gripped the combat knife Mr. Vanderohe had given him. Felt its grooves, its textures, and its entire form push against his fingers and chafe against his mostly soft hands.
-----------
In which Dieter remembers the combat knife Mr. Vanderohe had given him, and he would put it to good use.
(More of a fix-it, where I imagined how things would actually end.

Summary
Dieter blinks at the closing vault door, his chest heaving. The soft boom of it snapping into place echoes around. Good news – they’re safe from imminent death at the hands of zombies. Bad news – everything else. Dieter recalls some statistics about suffocation and enclosed spaces that he’d rather not recall, but which his mind helpfully supplies, either way. A flare of panic ziplines up his spine. They’re not very good statistics.

‘Don’t you dare ask for my sympathy when you willingly handed Nicky over to be tortured. You wanted us to suffer, Booker. If you didn’t, you would have given yourself up to be examined like a rat and left us alone.’
Shame was like acid in his throat. ‘Yes,’ said Booker hoarsely, ‘because you have no business being so goddamn happy while the rest of us are the exact opposite.’

Summary
Nicky had to shut his eyes and focus on taking a deep breath, his thoughts taking him back to the lab. Having to let that alleged scientist cut him in pieces and kill him repeatedly? He could have dealt with that, but having to watch Joe, his heart, go through the same without being able to help or hold him through it, was so much worse. Being forced to be so close and yet so far made him feel weak.
He could do nothing but wait until Joe opened his eyes again, to give what little comfort he could.

Summary
Life, though, brings pain. Goddamn pain. Bullets that struck his cranium and pelvis – the big bones in the body – are forced out. The rest went through him, carrying organ tissue and muscle with them. Those lost bits have to be regrown. Bones realign and the ribs in his lungs retract so they can breathe again. So Nicky can breathe again.
And when he breathes, he thinks, Yusuf.

Summary
They spend thirty minutes in the taxi from the airport to their hotel in the Bay, during which the downpour intensifies, but Nicky's head is leaning against the window and he's quietly smiling seemingly at nothing but himself. Their fingers are touching on the seat between them, pinkies overlapping like sneaking schoolchildren. Bright sunshine is already starting to peek through the parting clouds, catching on the lighter specks of blue and green in Nicky's eyes.

Summary
The first time is a challenge written in every line of Nicolò's body above him: a shine in his eyes, a quirk to his lips, the twitch of a muscle which gives the tension he's hiding away. He smiles down at Yusuf as if to say I've got you.
He does.
