She called him on the Fourth and they talked about it with the fireworks of Freeport sounding in his ear. A weekend visit was proposed and he accepted readily enough. “Good thing I found a guy with money,” Pete said dryly, and Ray looked at his shoes, kind of embarrassed, like when Jan had wanted him to buy her dress for prom and he had to tell her he couldn’t afford it. Jan deserved better than a used prom dress, and so did Pete. But they hadn’t exactly gotten the cash prize after pulling their stunt at the end of the Walk, so they had to make do.
“You wanna go somewhere tonight?” he said weakly, instead of telling Pete he’d like to buy him a new dress.
Pete tilted his head, gaze going half-lidded. “Nah, Ray. Tonight — I got other ideas for tonight.”

A few miles out, there was a little orange light flickering. Far too big and color-saturated to be a star. Too low to the ground. Ray squinted at it, then realized that it was a fire. Once he saw that, he could make out the silhouette of what was burning: a farm house.
That’s a beacon, he thought deliriously. Untethered dream logic. He could somehow see the rising smoke through the sheets of rain, through the darkness of night. It was a signal. It was for him.
(Or: A storm blows through The Long Walk's path. Ray and Pete build something in the eye.)
