dead ringer [idiom] - a person who looks exactly like another. one theory is that it originates from people's fear of being buried alive. in the 18th century particularly, a dying person would ask, upon their death, to be buried with a rope that attached to a bell on the surface. if it transpired that the deceased was not in fact dead, then they could use the rope to ring the bell. once rescued, the saved person would be an exact copy of the "deceased" person.
Jayce peeks at himself from under the fringe of his lanky, unruly hair, and sees the way he looks at his own hammer, then Jayce’s corrupted one, the way it pulses in time to what’s holding Viktor’s body together. It’s almost fascinating, watching the way his own face looks when he’s piecing something together, eyebrows furrowing in a way he didn’t know they did, nose scrunching briefly before he finally looks over at him. Jayce flinches at his gaze and glances away, listening to his own ragged breath as he tries to calm his racing heart.

Viktor takes a moment to dip his dumpling into soy sauce, taking a bite and chewing slowly. Jayce feels like he’s vibrating out of his skin, Viktor’s hand hot on his knee.
“The Hexclaw attaches and moves with our movements, like a third arm. I want this to give me sensation. That I feel through it. I’m attempting to adapt what we’ve used for the Hexclaw for this.”
“For a…vibrator?” Jayce furrows his brows.
“It’s not a vibrator, Jayce,” Viktor says patiently. “It’s a strap-on.”
In which Jayce can't keep his nose out of Viktor's business (his messy lab desk) and thus, the Hexstrap is born.

As far as punishments go, rebirthing a once terminally ill man - whose obsession with human perfection drove him to almost end humanity - in a hospital bed in palliative care could be seen as a little on the nose. To make it the same one he woke up in all those months-years-a lifetime ago, especially so. But Viktor can’t help feeling it’s far better than he deserves.
Viktor emerges from the Arcane, alone. He’s not sure he can navigate a world that doesn’t have Jayce Talis in it.

Summary
Jayce has always been prone to bright, intense bursts of emotion, Viktor knows. When he met him, he was about to make the most final decision a person can make. Something a person just doesn’t do if they didn’t feel so terribly, so deeply. Later, he seemed to stabilize, to manage his emotions with more ease.
Of course, now, after everything, all that progress is down the drain. Jayce cries some days just looking at Viktor, like he can’t believe he’s in front of him, that Viktor wants him. As if there was any version of Viktor that could ever not want Jayce Talis.

Summary
Staying in the lab gave Viktor far too much time to imagine what was going on outside of it. To imagine how Jayce spoke with people who weren’t his colleagues; with people who had no professional boundaries and perhaps too much to drink. People who could speak casually, flatter him, flirt with him—and that was all part of the deal. They had something Jayce needed, and he had no choice but to bite his tongue and endure their praise.
In a fit of jealousy, Viktor accidentally stumbles into an opportunity to tell Jayce what he really thinks.
