“You ate some of it?” I ask, rudely. I’m too irate to mind my language. Who do they think they are? That meat is for Grace. In a way, that meat is Grace.
“Yes,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. They and the rest of the human life support thrum know better than to be offended by my occasionally strange behaviour. “Obviously we weren’t going to risk the life of Honoured Grace on a completely untested technology.”
That doesn’t mean much. There’s a lot of things that are safe for ingestion by Eridians that would outright kill a human.
Trust Grace, I remind myself. He’ll have thought of all this.

“No,” Grace insists. “Go to other end of ship. Go back to sleep. Go unconscious.”
“I want to observe,” I say. “You’re enjoyable to watch. I want to know. I want to perceive everything about you.”
Grace… doesn’t say anything in response to that. His mouthparts move soundlessly, and his tongue flickers out to moisten his lip.

Every time Ilya saw Shane, he felt a lurch in his stomach. It had started before he dared to put a name to it, at the very first eager introduction he'd brushed off — a sudden welling tide of affection when he noticed the dark eyes alight in anticipation, freckles shifting with whatever expression was on Shane's face. Like a fool, Ilya had thought not naming it for a long time would keep the emotions at bay.
Ilya still didn't want to put a name to it, but he knew the danger there.
