Dunk rode away.
Whatever the past week had been, a week of luxuriating in bed, a week of sweet kisses and whispered promises, a week of the kind of love Lyonel had never imagined would ever come for him— whatever that had been, Dunk was still leaving. Yes, he’d said he was sorry to go but he’d still gotten on that damned horse and taken his boy and was riding away.
But Dunk comes back, and comes back and comes back.

John had knocked, Bob had opened the door, and John had bullied his way in before Bob could step outside to talk to him, or close the door on him like he’d intended. Further evidence that he's a bad host, a bad guy. An unacceptable boyfriend.
Dour and sour and disgusted with his very being, he grumbles, “I didn’t invite you.”
Apparently unbothered, John’s smirk flickers brighter. Playful and dry, he says, “I know.”

In a lifetime of unsubtleties, the affair with Crozier is James’s worst. Crozier’s hand resting on James’s lower back, there for all to see. Crozier’s fingers nudging gently at James’s shirtcuffs when they stood around at receptions; Crozier’s pale eyes going soft and foolish when James entered the room. Sometimes simply Crozier’s nod, sharp and proprietary, as though to say get upstairs, get in my office, close the door—as if the rest of them were not right there.
Or, the one where James and Dundy are bright young things (baby post-docs) in English literature, and there’s a cranky new professor in town ...
