Summary
Jim’s spent years pretending he’s a beta, and he can’t afford for Starfleet to find out he lied on his enlistment forms. So when he goes to Bones to get a new script for suppressants, and Bones needs a reason to put on his file, he’s happy to let Bones say that he’s trans, not lying. But…is he lying?
That’s how this fic started, but it soon became a sprawling exploration of how Jim and Bones might have supported each other in their Academy days, if they’d only had a little bit more reason to cuddle and open up. Together, they face Jim’s transition, Leonard’s family issues, and the increasing difficulty of defining what their relationship is, exactly…all while pursuing their careers in Starfleet. And when they are finally deployed, in response to an emergency transmission from Vulcan, how will they handle each other being in danger?

Summary
To celebrate a decade since my first fic on Ao3, I've decided I want to spend some time infodumping about worldbuilding decisions I've made in my fic, and HOW I make decisions like that.
I do a lot of research and thinking about things like letter-writing styles, transport, societal structures, culture, speculative creature biography, how magic works... and all these ideas come from somewhere! A LOT of briefly-mentioned things in my fic have more thought behind them than appears on screen, and research too. So where do I go looking when I'm building those ideas? What do I research, and what do I just make up?

It happened gradually, was the thing. The emperor’s rings were tighter in the evening than the morning; that was normal. And if the fit of the rings changed, little by little, the change wasn’t large enough from day to day for any of them to notice. And then Nemer found himself thinking it was time to contact Dachensol Habrobar about adding some ease to Edrehasivar’s signet ring, and realised all of a sudden that something had changed.
The signet ring had fit perfectly at first, Nemer was sure of it. Hadn’t it? Or was he remembering that wrong? Maybe it had always been a little snug, maybe they had accepted that it didn’t slide on easily in exchange for the security of knowing it wouldn’t slide off easily.

Canon-compliant up to the end of 'The Avengers', with additional details cherry-picked from comics and subsequent movies. The only pairings planned so far are Clint/Coulson and background Thor/Jane - by far the majority of these stories focus on the platonic relationships the team forms among themselves.

ART's new big idea for promoting construct rights in the Corporation Rim is a how-to video series, starring Murderbot. The first time it manages to get Murderbot in front of a camera, it's for a cooking tutorial - specifically, baking a cake. Both of them are perfectly capable of following instructions, so it should be a gentle introduction to filming a video together.
ART has never made a cake before. Murderbot has also never made a cake before. Neither of them can actually eat. However badly you think this is going to go, it will probably be worse.
