Jayce groans and squishes the heels of his palms into his eyes, dragging them down his face until they distort his features ghoulishly. "I know. I probably should at this point, just… I don't know. I want it to be more special than that?"
"Such a romantic," Viktor deadpans.
Jayce laughs. "Yeah, kinda. Not that it needs to be, like, wedding night sex, I just want—"
"—Somebody who elected to be there without financial incentive."
"Exactly."
"Let me do it," Viktor says, right as Jayce is mid-gulp of his moscow mule. Perfect timing. He half chokes and half laughs, but Viktor is committing to the bit, his eyebrows raised expectantly.
"Oh shit. Like actually, V?"
Jayce has a kink he’s itching to satisfy. His lab partner finally puts him out of his misery.

Summary
The Man of Progress is a symbol and a carefully crafted illusion. Behind it, Jayce has been sinking. Until Viktor makes an offhand comment at a gala and the illusion completely shatters.
“Jayce,” Viktor says. “You’re bleeding.”
That makes sense, Jayce thinks, since he’d apparently just crushed a glass in his hand.
“You’re also not breathing,” Viktor notes. His voice is concerned now, and Jayce feels Viktor’s hand fall on his elbow.
Jayce nods, because that makes sense too. Or, no. It doesn’t make sense. He should be breathing. But Viktor is correct that Jayce is not.

You won’t wake up immediately like you always do.” While Jayce has never refused a new idea Viktor has brought to their bedroom, he can’t quite wrap his head around the appeal of this particular scenario. If Viktor isn’t awake to respond to and enjoy their intimacy, what is the point of it, really?
“I know, but I think I will still be able to feel you, even if just subconsciously. At one point strong enough physical stimulation will wake me eventually.” Viktor pauses to find the words he’s so clearly carefully putting together in his mind. His voice drops to a conspiratory whisper. “But before that I want you to worship my body, until I can feel you in my dreams, Jayce. Will you indulge me?”

It had been a stupid bet to make.
These days, Jayce’s computer did the heavy lifting, crunching millions of numbers a day for his research with just a few keystroke commands. He hadn’t worked out a list of integrals by hand in the two years since he finished his math credit requirements, but neither had Viktor, so he had thought that meant he stood a chance.
Nope! That was before he had realized trig substitutions had vanished from his brain at the end of his coursework along with every other math trick needed to win – a Jayce problem only, apparently.
Still, it wasn’t clear just how stupid the bet was until he saw the barely-contained, sadistic excitement in Viktor’s eye when he emerged from their bedroom on reckoning day and sat down at the table.

Summary
Jayce has learned the odds and ends of his leg; what pains it, makes it worse for the evening, what's best for it throughout the day. He's gotten better at ignoring the hallucinations, barely blinking at the shapes and figures that visit him and taunt him from universes his mind still seems partially stuck in. He's made peace with Viktor's shape, the inhuman face of him made wholly different yet the heart of him still the same.
But the way Viktor stares at him, glaring, hungry like his hands itch to grab Jayce again, hurt him again... That, he can't quite reconcile.
Nor how he'd give anything for Viktor to do it.

Summary
A lot of this new existence is involuntary. A lot of it is outside of his control. Changing and chirping and glowing and wanting and starving in ways Viktor wouldn't allow if he had any say in it. Actively rooted out from himself when he did have a say in it.
He'd like to say grabbing Jayce, pressing him to the mattress, pinning him there to taste his supple, enticing mouth was involuntary as well. But that would be a lie, wouldn't it?
Alternatively: Post-canon, alive in a different universe, the machine Herald goes through a metamorphosis, grows some fun new parts, and is tormented by how much he'd like to use those new parts on Jayce. Thankfully, Jayce is more than eager to earn his monsterfucker card.

Jayce wakes up warm and comfortable, on his belly on a soft mattress, cocooned by soft, fur blankets. They’re on the outskirts of Ixtal, a secluded cabin deep in a rainforest seeped in magic, and Jayce can tell from the cool breeze wafting in from the ajar window that it had rained earlier, chasing away the oppressive humidity.
“Jayce,” a voice says, half Viktor’s pitched low, half that darkly familiar robotic burr.
“Mm, today a Herald day?” he mumbles into his pillow, shivering when he feels the cool metal of the third claw trace between his shoulder blades.
Sometimes Viktor wakes up in Herald form. Today, Jayce gets to enjoy it.

Summary
Jayce has always been prone to bright, intense bursts of emotion, Viktor knows. When he met him, he was about to make the most final decision a person can make. Something a person just doesn’t do if they didn’t feel so terribly, so deeply. Later, he seemed to stabilize, to manage his emotions with more ease.
Of course, now, after everything, all that progress is down the drain. Jayce cries some days just looking at Viktor, like he can’t believe he’s in front of him, that Viktor wants him. As if there was any version of Viktor that could ever not want Jayce Talis.

The Machine Herald is captured by Piltover after a failed attack on the bridge, and he is mortally wounded in the process. Jayce must risk everything to save him and repair the damage done, racing against the clock as Piltover hunts him down for treason, but the history between them complicates things. Despite his claims that his actions are no longer dictated by emotion, Viktor is still harboring anger and hatred for his exile in the wake of Jinx's attack, and blames Jayce for what happened. But despite it all, they still care about each other (in their own violent, traumatized ways) and as time runs out, necessity forces them to face the past—and each other—if they want to get out of this unscathed.
