Maysilee shakes hands with Haymitch. She can’t feel where their skin presses together, because she’s seven years away and in front of the old school building. It was right after a summer storm, when the trees were damp and all the world seemed fresh and new. He didn’t know that anyone was watching. It was before he grew into those broad shoulders and high cheekbones, back when he was a scrawny little ten year old and she was the only one really looking at him. His hands were gentle as he cradled the mockingjay, and shivering between his delicate fingers it was even prettier than her golden pin.
He didn’t sing, she remembers as they pull them all into the Justice Building, but he hummed for that little bird. Just a few notes of the Valley Song, where the words would be, Birds in the heavens know I love you, Know I love you, Oh...
