Matt did well with instruction back then, not just dares and challenges. He was a surprisingly good student. Jay always copied off of him. But when they tossed their caps up on graduation day and no roadmap fell back down into their hands, both stagnated. Matt’s world stayed small, but it was all he needed. Now they were like two fleas running laps on the head of a pin, forever and a day, but would either of them really have it any other way?
Jay dissolves his miserable daydream with a shake of his head, longing to return to his work at the piano keys. But there’s Matt, on his knees, in seeming supplication for another command.

Through everything, there's an overlay of I want to take his hand, that's so stupid. It's dark here, he could kiss me and nobody would have to know. Is he rough with himself – would he be rough with me? Could he be loud for me? Could I shut him up? It makes Jay feel like looseleaf paper falling out of the sheaf, mixed up with no context, can't figure out where anything gets put back.

As soon as the stomach-churning drop out of FTL is over Karkat's neural link goes absolutely apeshit with notifications. They pile up in his field of vision, oldest to newest, flashing practically every color of the goddamned rainbow. He groans and shoves them all out of his face with a swipe of his hand.
He submits his landing clearance and TASCo import authorization and flops back into his seat. With a few gestures he flips the image on his viewscreen to his forward facing cameras so he can look out at the expanse of Kuiper Station, tapping the confirmation for the station docking computer to take over the controls.
He almost can't believe that he's actually back.
