Summary
Coco’s heart thunders in her chest. Something is going to break through that wall, she thinks hysterically.
She would rather be going mad than believe that something in this house — the house she travelled halfway across the world to for shelter — is hunting her. Because that is what it feels like; she is a small animal hiding from a terrible beast.A ship carries a solitary young woman across the ocean to an unfamiliar country. She is an exile, in more ways than one, and seeks the help of a witch and the shelter of his manor. But although he takes her in from the cold the witch has his own secrets and his own ghosts. And there is something in his manor that creeps in the night and Coco is half-sure it is even more dangerous than the past she is running from.
The ghosts of Qifrey's atelier are hungry.

She wrinkles her nose slightly at the term, feeling awfully juvenile for saying it with such seriousness. "Um, the idea is that after a bit you'll end up being able to fall asleep better on your own, perhaps. Really, it's more of a temporary fix, but…"
When Coco reveals that her nightmares seem to dissipate whenever she falls asleep around her, Agott proposes a sort of short-term solution to the other girl's nighttime ailments. Somehow, it becomes more than just a thing to solve a problem, and Agott makes a few realizations along the way.

“No,” Iris shakes her head. She pauses, curling fingers around Selene’s wrist. Her discomfort eases—the dim bathroom lighting, the soft hum of the hand dryer, the muffled chatter just a room away—the world wanes, as her focus shapes itself around the girl before her.
Iris and Selene clumsily try again.
