“Shane,” Ilya cut him off, putting his arm around his shoulder and squeezing lightly, “she is very well prepared, and we will only be one phone call away if anything is wrong.” He eyed Eva, “you know you can call us anytime, yes Evochka?”
“Yeah Papa, of course.”
“Good.”
They fell into silence then, nothing more to say but ‘goodbye’. And none of them were quite ready for that just yet.

“Why?”
Shane blushed again. He ruffled Eva’s hair to stall for time, then finally worked up the nerve to try and explain himself.
“Honestly, I’m not sure. I’ll tell him someday, but I’ve done this with every bouquet he’s ever given me. So I guess I want to wait for a special day to show him.” He paused, then, “Maybe a big anniversary, or when we turn 50 or something.” Eva’s eyes lit up again.
“You’ve pressed all of them? That’s SO romantic Dad, ohmygosh.”

Shane has secretly preserved every flower Ilya has ever given him, and nobody knew for 18 whole years until their 9 year old daughter caught him in the act one day. He tells her (and us!) the stories that go with the flowers in his collection.

He sighed, brushed his fingers over her wispy black hair, and began to rock her lightly in his arms as Ilya sank slowly to the couch.
