“Will,” Mike starts.
“No, seriously,” Will says. The hand that isn’t holding his beer raises between them, twitching downwards like he’s physically shoving any of Mike’s other questions back down where they came from. “It was a stupid thing to ask.”
Mike shakes his head, then scoots forward, inching closer to Will. “It’s not,” he insists. “If it’s you asking, it’s not stupid, Will.”
On New Year's Eve, 1996, Will asks Mike a question. He gets an answer and then some.

“Um,” he says instead. “Huddling? For warmth?”
“For warmth,” Lucas echoes, and then looks back at Dustin again. “Huddling. For warmth.”
“Like penguins,” Mike offers, and then rests his head on Will’s shoulder like this is supposed to be helping, or something.

Mike opens his eyes. Then–
“Will,” he says, and it comes out a bit strangled. “Is that a puppy?”
This is a bit of a stupid question. Mike isn’t dumb. He knows what a puppy looks like. The thing in Will’s hands– a little wrinkled and brown and very covered in fur– is definitely a puppy.
Will brings home a dog. It goes about as well as expected.

“You’re thinking,” Will says, skating a finger down the line of Mike’s nose, under his eye, over his cheekbone, then resting, finally, just at the corner of his lips– “about me.”
Oh, Jesus. Mike’s throat is very, very dry. “What?”
Will opens his eyes – slow, a little hesitant – and smiles. “You are,” he says, way, way too smug for Mike’s liking. “You’re turning red!”
“Shut up,” Mike mutters, and Will’s smile grows. “You– I’m just nervous!”
It should be illegal for someone to look this pleased with themselves. “Yeah?” Will says quietly, index finger still hovering at the corner of Mike’s mouth, thumb pressed gently under his chin. “I make you nervous?”
Mike thinks Will might be psychic. (Kind of.) Will is being very irritatingly vague about the whole thing.

Annabeth Chase was not a fan of Valentine’s day.
Maybe she was cynical or cold hearted, but the holiday felt so shallow. It was a preformative day that had spilled into a preformative month, every store decked in pink and red, selling the idea of love but never anything lasting. Red roses wilt and chocolates get eaten. Teenage couples that proclaimed their undying love to one another this month would inevitably break up the next month. It promised so much meaning, but it was more like a shiny sheet of plastic covering everything that actually mattered.

The grand gestures, the sweet treats, the declarations of love, just the dramatic flare of it all. It was a day where everyone came together and decided that love should be venerated over all else. Troubles fell to the wayside just for the day, and all that mattered was making your loved ones feel special. What was more beautiful than that? Also, did he mention the treats?OR

The words sounded wrong the moment they left her mouth. Percy blinked, and confusion crossed his face first before concern deepened into something softer and more alarmed.
“Since when you don’t want to talk about something with me?”
Something inside her snapped painfully at the question he asked, for reasons she wasn’t quite sure she understood. She was hurting and very irritable and she was on the verge of tears for so, so long now.
“Since it’s your fault!” she snapped, her voice more defeated than loud.
