Summary
“Mike…it's your birthday,” Will reminded him. Will slowly walked up into Mike’s space. Mike stayed still, looking down at the hardwood floor.
“I know.”
“You thought I forgot?”
Mike’s lips quivered at that, his eyes still remained at the floor until a pair of adidas shoes poured into his vision. He nodded.
Or:
Mike believes he should suffer for his birthday, just as he made Will suffer all those years ago. He sits alone in his apartment in Brooklyn, drowning in pain he had inflicted on himself, and believing this is the final straw to how his story will end. It isn't until a reminder of who he is, and who he should become bursts into his apartment.
It's Wills turn to be the heart, and save Mike from his own misery.

Summary
A year after the gates opened, the Byers family is living in the Wheeler basement, and Will is sleeping on the couch while Mike stays two floors above him.
Mike has been acting strange. He barely sleeps, barely eats, and spends every spare moment making plans that seem to include everyone’s survival except his own. When Will confides in Dustin during class, Dustin accidentally mentions something Will never knew: while Will was still missing in 1983, after the fake body was found, Troy forced Mike to jump off the quarry cliff to save Dustin.
Will cannot stop thinking about it. Because Mike has thrown his life away under pressure before. And now he looks like he is standing on another edge.
