After Dimitri's step-mother disappeared, the idea had been raised to foster young Dimitri among peers his own age. No one else in the royal cabinet had even been considered: Rodrigue and his snowbound homestead had been the only conceivable choice.
Winter in Fraldarius territory proved to be far colder than that in the crown city. The weather was violent and angry, but the homestead and its people were warm and welcoming. It did not take Dimitri long to forget that he'd ever felt numb in such a place.
He did not know, then, that his season in Fort Fraldarius was the last time and place he would ever feel safe.
