She will ask him to dance, as she always does, and he will do his duty and lead her to the floor, and know once more the sweet torture of holding her in his arms in a crowded room, every eye on him and her, searching for something to start the rumours they will repeat the next day. He is vigilant, always; they will never see anything untoward in his manner, they will never catch him in a longing look or a lovelorn sigh. But he can only bear so much — he prays she will spare him yet another night of agony.

Gascon didn’t like the falcons, but he felt sorry for them. Everyone told him that the birds didn’t mind, that they liked being trained and kept for hunting, that the hoods kept them calm and stopped them hurting themselves. But he couldn’t help feeling that if he had a bird’s wings, he’d much rather be taking to the skies, not stuck in the dusty old mews, bound to a perch, sitting in the dark.
As peace reigns in Lyria after the Second Northern War, Gascon feels the need to stretch his wings and soar beyond the confines of Meve's court and the gilded cage of his duchy.
