“You’re either very impatient or extremely sure of yourself,” he says, a little bit biting, because it’s all Patrick’s fault he’s off-kilter anyway. It doesn’t feel fair that Patrick gets to laugh at him when if Ray was doing this little interview, David would be just fine.
“Threw you a bit of a change-up there, huh?” Patrick replies, quick, grinning so hard he’s practically glowing, and all David can think is yes, yes you fucking did.
Or, everything is the same but David is an empath who can feel other people's emotions through touch.

David bites his tongue, because snippy customer service is one of life's great trials, but life without caffeine is worse. He's learnt this to his detriment over the years.

Patrick is new in town (and newly out) and decides to go to a queer pop-up bar event where he meets David in The Leather Jacket. The background to this fic is Adam Lambert's "If I Had You" song.
It's the second in my "Songs and Moments" series, which is a series of short fics where I got ideas for David and Patrick moments while listening to songs. This series is not meant to be read in any order - each piece is standalone and they're not part of a single imagining of their relationship (i.e., I might end up with 50 meet-cutes *shrugs*).

Summary
David was well practiced in turning nothing into something. This situation with Patrick sure felt like something, but he needed to be sure. He used to count things out of anxiety but this was a scientific inquiry. It was definitely not a compulsion.
Patrick was spending entirely too much time thinking about, wondering about, and, if he was honest, fantasizing about his new business partner. He knew he could get caught in an endless loop of this kind of analysis and speculation. He needed an action item.

"I could go with you," David repeats, and he turns and looks at Patrick, and there's something in his eyes that makes Patrick's mouth go dry. "As your boyfriend."
"That's nice of you to offer," Patrick says, blinking, "but I don't think that an alpha bromance would—"
"No," David says. "As your omega boyfriend."
Patrick's head is spinning. He feels like he's somehow missed half the conversation. It really shouldn't need to be said, but— "You're not," he tells David. "An omega."
"I have been," David says, and shrugs. It's a liquid movement, aggressively casual, and Patrick suddenly burns with the desire to know exactly what on earth David means by it.
