    As the oldest, Raph had many privileges his younger siblings didn't have. 

    He could stay up longer, he could be in charge, he could try new things sooner-

    He didn't get sick. 

    A simple fact. He was the oldest, the biggest, the strongest. He doesn't get sick. He can't afford to, he needs to take care of his brothers- but he doesn't need to worry about it because he's the oldest which means he doesn't. Get. Sick-

    "'Doesn't get sick' he said." Meanwhile, the soft shell grumbled, using his wrist gauntlet to take his temperature again, frowning with disapproval. "Congratulations, Raphael. You have a fever as high as any warm-blooded being's body temperature."

    Seems like their biggest and strongest brother can get sick after all... if only he would admit it.

    “D’you…?” The snapper cut himself off. He probably shouldn’t be asking that. But as soon as he tried to stop himself, the words came tumbling out regardless; like an avalanche from his mouth, just as heavy and just as deadly. Curse this concussion. Curse the Hamato line. Curse his stupid, heroic fate. “D’you hate me? For hurting you? For almost killing you? In more than one way- I got you stuck in the Prison Dimension.”
    A long, LONG silence unfolded between them. Stretching out and out into eternity. When Leo went to speak again, his voice was unsteady; caught off-guard. Wet with confusion and heartbreak. Asking,
    “Raph… Where is this coming from? What the hell are you talking about?”

     

    Raphael knows what he's good for. He also knows it's gonna kill him eventually- the only question is when and how. His brothers really don't seem to like that. He can't imagine why.

    Raphael has never been taught how to want things for himself – only how to protect, endure, and stay behind.

    So when his brothers move on without him, chasing their futures, the lair grows emptier and the days blur together. Raphael slowly disappears into the space he was never meant to fill alone.

    It takes an outsider to realize what the family has overlooked.

    ORR this idea won’t get outta my damn head so I have to write it out. The brothers leave for something in the hidden city - be it a career or education. But Raph stays behind, failing to realise how much their absence will affect him.

    It was a simple question: What did Raph mean when he said 'April's the big brother now?'

    Let's take a journey back to when the turtles and April were younger, when children are still figuring out their place in the world, and maybe the first time Raph got weird.

    This is a direct sequel to "Anger is the Color of Your Energy," so I'd advise reading that before moving on to this as there will be references to things that happened in that story. But do what you want, I'm not in charge of you.

    See the end notes for some of my thoughts on how Raph "getting weird" hasn't been explored as thoroughly in the fandom.

    His eyes burned harder as something trickled down his face. He wanted to shrink, to disappear. There was too much noise, not enough color.

    “Raph!”

    Raph fights enemies in order to save his little brothers.

    At least, that’s what he thinks is happening.
