“Yes, Mommy,” she whimpered, and the word tasted obscene, sweet, perfect.
A filthy joke with her name written on it. She wanted to die. She wanted Mantra to make her say it again.
Mantra’s laugh wasn’t a laugh at all, not in the human sense. It was the scrape of scales on bone, a sound that shivered through the bath and pressed hot against the Doctor’s skull, a pulse of violence right behind her eyes.
